🌟 Royal Cornwall Show 2026 🌟

It may have been a bit wet, a bit windy and a little shorter than we all anticipated, but we still had a fantastic time at the Royal Cornwall Show last week.

The Royal Cornwall Show continues to play an important role in showcasing the industries that help Cornwall thrive. From agriculture and food production through to construction, engineering and technology, the event highlights the expertise, innovation and hard work that drives the region forward, and we're always delighted to be able to attend along with some of our latest additions to the fleet!

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to visit us and our friends on the JAW Hire stand!

We’re already looking forward to next year 👍

🚧 Crewkerne S278 Works 🚧

We’re pleased to share that the Champion Groundworks team has recently started work on the long-awaited S278 works on Station Road, Crewkerne, for our valued client Taylor Wimpey.

This phase of work will create a new entrance road off Station Road, enabling the construction of a new link road connecting to a further new junction and subsequent S278 scheme off Yeovil Road.

We’ve teamed up with the expert team at Ground Stabilisation Solutions to utilise stabilisation methods that will help avoid more than 3,000 lorry movements through the centre of Crewkerne — reducing waste, cost, disruption and carbon impact for the local community.

The GSS team will reuse circa 30,000m³ of site-won fill to form a new embankment for the carriageway construction, before cement stabilising the top layer to create a sub-base replacement material.

We’re leaning on stabilisation more and more across our projects, and we’re delighted to be working with the GSS team to utilise stabilisation within the road formation on this scheme.

We hope this marks the beginning of many more projects across the South West where stabilised material is approved within road formations. It delivers what projects need in a more environmentally friendly way, while reducing disruption to local communities — a win for everyone.

Well done, Rich 👏

We’re delighted to share that Rich Andrews has recently been promoted to Project Manager, based out of our Exeter office.

Rich originally joined us as a Labourer, almost 11 years ago - bringing with him 10 years’ experience in highways. He quickly progressed into a site management position, and has been successfully managing sites for us ever since.

Never one to shy away from developing his skills, Rich has always been keen to progress — and his dedication and determination have shown in everything he’s achieved. Last year alone, Rich completed both his Level 3 and Level 6 NVQs.

Most recently, Rich has been working as Site Manager on our project with Bloor Homes in Cullompton. We’re sure the whole site team will be pleased to know he’ll continue to oversee this project, alongside a range of others, as part of his new role.

As Project Manager, Rich will now take on the challenge of managing multiple complex projects, building strong relationships with our clients, and playing a greater role in programme planning and project delivery.

It’s a challenge we’re confident he’ll rise to with ease.

Well done, Rich — a well-deserved move, and we can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes you. 👏

Welcome to the team: Sam Voaden 🤝

We were delighted to recently welcome Sam Voaden to the Champion Groundworks team as our new Quality & Development Specialist.

Sam joins our growing Quality & Development team, headed up by Tom Smale in our Exeter office, and brings with him a huge amount of experience and knowledge from his previous role at NHBC.

Having worked closely with Sam over the last few years where he worked closley with us on CQRs on our sites, we already knew the level of passion and dedication he has when it comes to quality and continuous improvement — values that are hugely important to us at Champion Groundworks.

Champion Groundworks was proudly the first groundworks business in the region to voluntarily commit to working with NHBC on CQRs when they became available for groundworkers. Since then, they have become a core part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring we deliver the very highest standards of quality on every project we undertake.‍

Since joining the team, Sam has been spending time out on our projects across Devon, getting hands-on experience with our plot foundation gangs and gaining a deeper understanding of the work that goes into delivering exceptional foundations.

We’re incredibly excited to have Sam as part of the Champion Groundworks family and look forward to seeing what he’ll achieve within our Quality & Development team 🚀

A huge thank you to everyone involved in preparing and delivering the machines, and we look forward to seeing them out on site supporting our teams over the coming months.
