Tony recently celebrated two decades with Champion Groundworks—and we couldn’t let that milestone pass without a big thank you!

Tony joined while our Liskeard head office was still being built and our Managing Director, Jamie Roberts, was a fresh-faced QS. Plenty has changed since then, but Tony’s hard work and dedication have never wavered.

Reliable, knowledgeable and a character you simply couldn’t replicate, Tony is someone our team can always count on. His experience, quick wit and impressive memory keep the younger members of the team on their toes!

Remembering Kieran James Lerwill 🕊️

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the sudden and tragic loss of Kieran James Lerwill, a much-loved member of the Champion Groundworks team, who recently passed away following a serious road traffic collision.

Kieran joined Team Champion early last year through his childhood friend Matt. A keen learner with a bright future ahead of him, he quickly became a valued member of our team.

We will fondly remember his calm nature, his one-liners that kept his teammates laughing, and his love of motorcycling. His absence is deeply felt across the business, particularly by those who worked alongside him and the friends who knew him best. Across the wider Champion Groundworks family, we are shocked and saddened by the loss of such a young and promising member of our team.

Our heartfelt condolences go to Kieran’s mum Jennie, stepdad Adam and partner Amiee, along with his wider family, friends and everyone affected by his passing. Our thoughts are with you all during this incredibly difficult time.

Kieran, thank you for the hard work, the laughter and the memories. You will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all of us at Champion.

🎉 10 year Anniversary 🎉

From joining us as a trainee Construction Administrator in 2016 to becoming a vital member of our SHEQ team, Katie has shown fantastic commitment to developing her skills as part of team Champion—completing her apprenticeship, NEBOSH qualification and, most recently, her Level 6 NVQ.

Katie is currently enjoying maternity leave after welcoming gorgeous little Rayna earlier this year, and we’re very much looking forward to welcoming her back in the not-too-distant future.

Thank you, Katie, for ten years of hard work and dedication. Here’s to many more milestones with team Champion! 👏

Building Knowledge, Delivering Quality👷

Last week, members of our Commercial, Adoptions, Procurement and Quality teams visited Wrekin’s Civils Hub in Lichfield.

The visit explored how specifying the right products and installing them correctly first time helps to support lasting infrastructure, maintain highway standards, reduce defects and deliver smoother inspections and quicker adoptions of roads & sewers for our valued clients.

A valuable opportunity to share knowledge with our suppliers and bring practical insights back to our site teams.

📣 WE’RE HIRING – FINANCE ASSISTANT

We’re looking for an experienced Finance Assistant to join our busy, friendly team at Champion Groundworks’ head office in Liskeard.

Working closely with our Finance Director, you’ll support day-to-day accounts and payroll, helping ensure our suppliers and employees are paid accurately and on time.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

✅ A solid background in accounts and/or payroll
✅ Confident, hands-on experience with Sage and Excel
✅ Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
✅ A proactive, can-do attitude and enjoy working as part of a team

Experience within construction or groundworks is highly desirable, and knowledge of CIS would be an advantage.

New project: Yelverton, Devon 🏘️

We’re pleased to announce that Champion Groundworks will be delivering the groundworks and infrastructure for Classic Builders on a brand new 41-plot development in Yelverton.

Our scope covers the drainage, roads and access needed across the site, including a large attenuation basin and more than 500 linear metres of retaining walls.

The full package includes:

➡️ Groundworks for 41 plots
➡️ Construction of a large attenuation basin
➡️ 493.5m² of tarmac parking courts
➡️ 1,478m² of private driveways
➡️ 547.1m² of private footpaths
➡️ 513 linear metres of retaining walls
➡️ 481.23m of drainage
➡️ 1,985m² of adopted tarmac roads
➡️ 264.5m² of adopted vehicle crossovers
➡️ 637.2m² of adopted footpaths

⛵ The Champion Summer Sail!

Once a year, we swap the site for the sea to say thank you to our brilliant team. Everyone across Champion is invited, and this year we had our best turnout yet!

From apprentices and site teams to office colleagues and some of the legends who helped build Champion into the business we're proud to be part of today — it was fantastic to have everyone together.

We sailed from Plymouth’s Barbican Steps for an afternoon of catching up and a good old knees-up, before carrying on the celebrations back on dry land.

The weather didn’t quite get the summer memo, but when has that ever stopped a groundworker? ☔

Thanks to everyone who joined us and to Plymouth Boat Trips for having us on board. Here’s to the next one! 💙

A new van and a new chapter for Jake! 🚐

We’re delighted to see Fleet Support Engineer Jake Wilton take to the road in his very own brand-new fleet support van.

Jake joined Champion as an apprentice, completing his Level 3 Land-based Service Engineering Technician qualification at Bicton College. Four years after completing his apprenticeship—and following six years working independently across Cornwall and Devon—this latest investment marks another fantastic milestone in his career.

Jake has wasted no time putting the new van to work, covering more than 500 miles in the first few days alone!

Congratulations, Jake—we hope you enjoy many happy miles in the new van.

PROJECT UPDATE | TITHEBARN, EXETER 👷

Our team are making fantastic progress at Tithebarn, Exeter, where we’re delivering the groundworks and infrastructure package for E G Carter & Co Ltd on this exciting new development of 68 affordable and sustainable homes for the local community.

With the roads and drainage installed, SDS attenuation crates in place and approximately half of the 68 plots handed over, phase one is nearing completion.

We’re now moving into phase two, including the remaining plots and a substantial 180-metre reinforced concrete retaining wall—delivered by some very special members of the Champion team. More on that soon!

Another brilliant effort from everyone on site - well done Team Champion!
