“It’s hardly been used.”

But do you know when your fall arrest block was last serviced? 👀

How often it’s used is only part of the picture. Storage conditions, the working environment and the manufacturer’s instructions all matter when determining its servicing requirements.

Depending on the model, servicing may involve internal examination and replacement of specified components. Where the manufacturer requires this at set intervals, low usage doesn’t remove that requirement.

It’s also worth asking about after-sales support before purchasing:

▪️ Is there an approved service network?
▪️ Are spare parts readily available?
▪️ Can the block be repaired?
▪️ What are the ongoing servicing costs?

The purchase price is only part of the cost. Knowing how your equipment can be maintained helps you plan ahead.

A damaged latch doesn’t always mean replacing the whole hook.

Sometimes, the right replacement component is all that’s needed, provided the rest of the equipment is fit for continued use.

A missing hook latch. A seized connector. A damaged fitting.

They might be small components, but they all deserve a closer look.

When our engineers inspect lifting equipment, it’s these details they’re looking for as well as the bigger, more obvious defects.

And when we find an issue? We explain what needs done and, where a safe repair is possible, we can carry it out on site.

In September alone, we repaired 219 items helping customers get their equipment safely back into service.

219 items repaired this month - That’s where having the right inspection team on site makes a difference!

September Stats:
✅ 2,227 passed
🔧 219 repaired
❌ 186 failed

Those 219 items could otherwise have been condemned, but with the skills and parts to carry out repairs on site, we were able to get them safely back into service.

Seized connectors, broken hooks, missing latches and stretched chain legs were just some of the issues our engineers put right this month.

We’re finishing up a busy month of inspections across England and Wales, before the guys head to Certex next week for further training on forklifts and telehandlers.

What happens between inspections matters too.

A LOLER or PUWER inspection gives you a snapshot of your equipment at that point in time but how it’s stored, used and checked in the weeks and months afterwards can make a big difference.

Between inspections, it’s worth keeping an eye on:

▪️How and where lifting equipment is being stored
▪️Visible signs of wear, damage or deterioration
▪️Whether damaged equipment is being reported and removed from use
▪️Whether chains, slings, shackles and hooks are being kept organised
▪️Whether certificates and equipment records are easy to access

Good equipment management shouldn’t start and end on inspection day.

A busy day on site with the AMG engineers 👷‍♂️

The team were recently out with TopFrame Engineering and Terracon carrying out inspections across a wide range of lifting and work equipment.

It was also great to see TopFrame’s new site and catch up with the team while we were there.

From slings, hooks and lever hoists to scissor lifts and overhead cranes, no two inspection days are ever quite the same ⛓️‍💥 👷🏼‍♂️

It’s a good example of the variety our engineers deal with every week and the importance of having equipment regularly inspected, recorded and kept safe for use.

A big thanks to both teams for having us on site!

What should you actually expect from your lifting equipment inspection provider? ⛓️

Turning up and carrying out the inspection should be the minimum.

For us at AMG Plant testing, good service also means helping customers understand what has failed, what can be repaired, what needs replaced and what the most practical next step is.

It means making certification easy to access through our CheckedOK QR codes, so equipment records can be viewed quickly when they’re needed.

It also means keeping a clearer history of your equipment, including our new repair recording feature, which allows repairs to be logged against individual items within the system.

Add to that replacement equipment supply, certification and support with keeping inspection cycles easier to manage, and the inspection becomes part of a much better overall system.

Because the inspection itself is only one part of the job.
