Failed Equipment Find 👀

At first glance, this screw pin bow shackle might not look too bad, but once inspected properly, the issue becomes clear.

The screw pin was no longer threading in correctly and wasn’t protruding fully beyond the arch of the shackle as it should.

Why does that matter?

Because if the pin isn’t fully engaged, the shackle can no longer safely take the load it’s rated for making it a failed item under LOLER inspection.

In this case, due to the cost and safety implications, replacement was the safest and most practical option.

The customer was supplied with a brand new bow shackle, complete with:
✅ Unique serial number
✅ Certification
✅ Tagged and ready for use on site

This is exactly why thorough examinations and properly trained engineers are so important.

To the untrained eye, issues like this can easily be missed, but small defects can create serious risks if lifting equipment continues to be used.

That’s why LOLER inspections matter

What is a lever hoist and where is it used? 👀

A lever hoist is a manual lifting and pulling device used to move heavy loads using a hand-operated lever.

They’re commonly used across construction, engineering, overhead line, offshore and marine environments for:
▪️Lifting heavy loads vertically
▪️Pulling or tensioning equipment
▪️Positioning machinery precisely
▪️Aligning or securing structures

At AMG, we stock the William Hackett range of lever hoists, including both the L4 and SSL5 models.

From standard 1.5m chain lengths up to 3m, with lifting capacities ranging from 500kg to 3.2T, we keep a variety of options on the shelf and if you require heavier capacities or longer chain lengths, we can source those directly too.

So, what’s the difference?

➡️ The L4 range is ideal for everyday use across construction and engineering environments.
➡️ The SSL5 range is designed specifically for overhead line, offshore and marine conditions.

Why do we stock William Hackett?

Simply put - quality, durability and reliability.

Their products have a strong reputation across the lifting industry, spare parts are easily sourced, and with regular servicing and maintenance, these hoists are built to last for years.

This is a big yoke… literally 👀

We recently had a customer come to us looking for something a bit more bespoke for work involving wind turbines and motors weighing up to 20T

To suit the job, we sourced a bespoke Yoke offshore swivel hook rated up to 26T, complete with a custom bow shackle and joining link setup.

Not every lifting requirement is standard, and that’s where bespoke solutions become essential!

Safe to say this one will be hard to miss when it lands on site 😲

This is modern LOLER Compliance in action 👷🏼📱

We used to place handwritten labels on equipment such as excavators, forklifts and dumpers showing key details like:

• Date of examination
• Serial number
• Safe Working Load
• Next inspection due

But as we move forward with technology, so do our systems powered by CoreRFID:

Now, all you need to do is locate the label on the machine marked:
“Scan for LOLER / GA1”

Simply scan the QR code using your phone, and you’ll be taken directly to the live certificate, with all the relevant information instantly available.

No paperwork. No searching. No delays.

Even better - there are no restrictions on access, meaning if HSE arrive on site, certification can be quickly and easily provided.

A simple change, but one that makes compliance clearer, faster, and more efficient for everyone on site

If you’d like to bring this system to your site or find out more, get in touch with the team or comment below & we will message you directly 📩

What’s in our van and why it matters to our customers 🚐

When our engineers arrive on site, it’s not just to inspect, it’s to help keep things moving.

Our vans are stocked with everything from slings and shackles to chain components, hooks, harnesses and more.
Basically, all the bits that are most likely to need replaced if something doesn’t pass inspection.

We also carry the tools to carry out repairs there and then, along with everything needed to tag equipment once it’s been checked and passed.

If something fails, the last thing you want is more downtime waiting on replacements.

That’s why we keep our vans well stocked, based on what we’re seeing out on site every day. Our software helps us track what’s being replaced most often, so we can make sure we’ve got the right gear ready to go.

It means we can often sort things on the spot, keeping your team working, and your site safe and compliant ⛓ 👷🏼

This quick fix could save you replacing the whole hook 👀

Replacing a self-locking hook latch is a simple but important repair that helps bring lifting equipment back into compliance.

This was done at our HQ by our engineer Gerard - saving the customer time, cost, and unnecessary replacement!

The item is then photographed and logged onto our CheckedOK system, ensuring full traceability and up-to-date certification.
