Acres Engineering Welcomes Honorary Consul of France to Discuss Innovation, Industry and International Collaboration.

Acres Engineering was delighted to welcome Jean-Claude Lafontaine, Honorary Consul of France for the East Midlands and Chief Executive Officer of Innaxys Ltd, to our Melbourne, Derbyshire headquarters ahead of the 'Melbourne Remembers Lancastria' event.

The visit provided an opportunity to showcase Acres Engineering's manufacturing capabilities, discuss the importance of engineering and technology in supporting UK industry, and explore the role that international collaboration plays in driving innovation, economic growth and regional prosperity.

⚓ Remembering the tragic sinking of HMT Lancastria – 86 years ago today.

This weekend we are holding a special event to unveil a permanent memorial to the often forgotten tragedy.

Today, June 17th, we mark the 86th anniversary of the sinking of HMT Lancastria, as part of Operation Aerial, the mass evacuation of civilians and military personnel from the port of St. Nazaire, Brittany. Britain’s worst maritime disaster, the sinking of the 23,500 ton troopship HMT Lancastria, which took place in the Loire estuary, near Saint-Nazaire, when she was bombed by a German Junkers 88 dive bomber.

An estimated 3000-5000 Army and RAF personnel, ship’s crew and civilians were lost. Many were unidentified, but those that were are buried north and south of the submerged wreck. Some as far north as Brest and others as far south as Soulac-sur-Mer, near the Gironde. Those that were either not found or unidentified are remembered at Dunkirk, Runnymede, Brookwood and Tower Hill Memorials.

On June 11th Our Purchasing Manager Helen's son Aiden joined us for a day of hands on work experience at Acres HQ.

Already a familiar face in the office, Aiden who is in Year 9 at Ashby School (Previously Ashby Grammar School) had a day getting hands-on on the shop floor, as part of the school's careers development programme ‘Take Your Child to Work Day’ initiative. He thoroughly enjoyed a day being actively involved with everything from Laser cutting to assembly and paint.

Last week we hosted 2 students for Work Experience placements, the first of which was Hamza - An inspiring young man who came to England as a refugee from Sudan a number of years ago, not speaking a work of English.

In the years since, he has gained an excellent grasp of the English language through Derby College, gained GCSEs in Engineering, Maths and English and currently works at M&S Logistics in Derby whilst he works on a Level 3 BTEC in Engineering at Nottingham College.

All this whilst volunteering at a Derby charity "New Arrivals Alliance" helping new arrivals to settle in and get help with things such as finding accommodation, work, bank accounts etc.

His long term career aim is to work in Mechanical Engineering - Both hands-on and design - Which the Midlands is well known for, be that Aerospace, Automotive, Rail, Nuclear etc.

He very much enjoyed his week at Acres - Starting in the design office and working through to the shop floor to try his skills at design, fabrication, finishing, paint application and much more.

We wish him the best of luck in his future career aspirations!

June 6th marked the 82nd anniversary of the Normandy D-Day Landings, the largest seaborne invasion in history took place, as Allied forces began the liberation of German occupied Europe during World War II.

On 6th June 1944, the Allies landed around 156,000 troops in Normandy. Estimates vary, but it is believed that 425,000 Allied and German troops were killed, wounded or went missing during the Battle of Normandy.

During D-Day, soldiers from our antecedent regiments were involved. 2nd Battalion, The Cheshire Regiment landed at Gold Beach. Elsewhere, a number of Sherwood Foresters soldiers were part of 4 Commando, the first British Army unit to land at Sword Beach.

We were proud to represent Acres Engineering at the Derbyshire King's Awards for Enterprise Breakfast Event, hosted by Marvin Cooke at the University of Derby

Luke and Alison Parker joined fellow King's Award recipients on a panel discussion, sharing the Acres Engineering journey, the impact of winning a King's Award, and encouraging other businesses to consider applying for this prestigious national honour.

A special congratulations to our fellow Derbyshire King's Award winners:

It was inspiring to hear the stories behind each organisation's success and to see so many businesses interested in beginning their own King's Award journey.

One of the strongest messages from the morning was that many outstanding businesses rule themselves out too early. The King's Awards are not reserved for household names or multinational corporations. They recognise organisations of all sizes that are creating genuine impact through innovation, exports, sustainability, or creating opportunities for people.

For Acres Engineering, winning the King's Award for Enterprise in Promoting Opportunity recognised our long-term commitment to apprenticeships, workforce development, social mobility, and creating pathways into engineering careers. We are incredibly proud to be only the second Derbyshire business to receive this award in the Promoting Opportunity category.

Thank you to Marvin Cooke, the University of Derby, the Derbyshire King's Awards Panel, and His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Elizabeth Fothergill CBE, for organising and supporting such a valuable event.

🏭 What is really happening inside UK manufacturing businesses right now?

🏦 This week, Acres Engineering had the privilege of hosting Megan Greene, External Member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, together with representatives from the Bank's East Midlands Agency.

The discussion covered a range of topics affecting manufacturers across the UK, including business confidence, investment decisions, skills, labour availability, wage pressures, material costs and the outlook for growth.

One of the key messages that we communicated was that many manufacturers have the capability, capacity and ambition to grow. The challenge is creating the confidence and demand needed to unlock further investment is a challenging ‘cost’ environment.

In our latest blog, we share our reflections from the visit, the opportunities facing UK manufacturing, and some of the challenges businesses are currently navigating.
