Visible bolted connections at Rawlings Office, Bristol.

Bolted connections are probably the classic glulam connection - strong, reliable and familiar on site. In projects like this, the exposed steelwork and visible fixings become part of the overall look of the structure rather than being hidden away.

They work particularly well in exposed office structures, industrial-style spaces and portal frames where both strength and appearance matter.

You can read more about different glulam connection types in our recent blog: https://www.bucklandtimber.co.uk/blog/a-guide-to-glulam-connections-and-when-to-use-them/

A closer look at some of the connection detailing from a Marquee project.

Steel plates, concealed fixings and precision-machined timber components all prepared in the workshop before heading to site.

Always nice seeing the combination of timber craftsmanship and engineered detailing side by side.

We’ve explored the different connection types, where they work best and what to consider when specifying them in our latest blog. You can read it here: https://www.bucklandtimber.co.uk/blog/a-guide-to-glulam-connections-and-when-to-use-them/

Busy with a bit of finishing work in the workshop.

Sanding and preparing connection details before components head out to site. Small details, but they make a big difference once everything is assembled and exposed.

Spruce glulam rafters and trusses coming together on site, supported by a steel structure for this bespoke build.

Clean lines, accurate detailing and a structure that really starts to show its scale once the framing is in place - A great example of timber and steel working together

Good to support Inspired Designs on this one, and see the installation progressing nicely on site.

Thanks to Jamie for the photos.

Connections in glulam structures do far more than simply hold timber together.

They influence:
• installation time
• fire performance
• movement within the structure
• and ultimately how the finished project looks.

In our latest blog, we break down the most commonly specified glulam connection types - including bolted, dowelled, resin-anchored and concealed systems - along with where they work best and the trade-offs to consider with each....A practical guide for architects, engineers and anyone designing with glulam!

Read it here: https://www.bucklandtimber.co.uk/blog/a-guide-to-glulam-connections-and-when-to-use-them/

📷 Pictured are just three of the connection types covered in the blog - each suited to different structural and installation requirements. Gold star to anyone who can name them.

A few workshop details from a residential timber project for a bespoke home and garden design company.

Some nice machining and joinery details in these photos - from shaped boarding and timber connections through to the roof truss assembly.

Always good to see the different elements laid out before installation.

Welcome to Oliver, who has joined us as a trainee Project Manager after studying Forestry and Wood Science.

Working with mass timber was something he was keen on from the start, and he’s now getting hands-on experience across a range of projects - from design and manufacture through to installation.

Good to have you on board and getting stuck in, Oliver.

You can read more about Oliver, as well as two more of our newer team members, David and Mac, here:

Every connection matters.

Bolt positions, spacing and timber grain direction are all carefully worked through to make sure the structure performs as intended.

Simple-looking details doing a lot of heavy lifting.

UK spruce glulam portal frame with concealed bolt connections and custom-designed cruciform apex joints.

Good to see the scale of the structure here, and always interesting to see projects at this stage, before everything else starts to close in around the frame.
