👋 Meet the Team – Benjamin

Meet Benjamin Davis, our Birch Hill Stonemason, who has been with us for over eight years.

Benjamin’s favourite part of the job is seeing a completed project that he’s helped to create, knowing the stonework will remain in place and be appreciated for many years to come.

When asked about his favourite project, there have been plenty to choose from, but working some of the stone for Tintern Abbey is definitely one that stands out.

☕ Go-to drink? Coffee, definitely!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Ideal day off? Spending time with his family.

🎨 A skill he’d love to master? The ability to draw and paint. A different kind of creativity from working with stone!

🌱 Fun fact: Since owning his own home, Benjamin has become a keen gardener and enjoys growing all sorts of weird and wonderful things.

After more than eight years with Birch Hill, Benjamin takes real pride in the craftsmanship that goes into every job and creating stonework that’s made to stand the test of time.

👋 Meet the Team – Trevor

Meet Trevor Rich, our Birch Hill Quarry Manager, who has been with Cotswold Hill for four years.

Trevor enjoys overseeing the day-to-day running of the quarry and making sure everything keeps moving as it should.

When asked about his favourite project, there have been far too many to name, but Tintern Abbey is certainly one that stands out.

🪚 Favourite tool? His 1.2m cross-cut Wells stone saw. In Trevor’s words, he couldn’t be without it!

🥛 Go-to drink? Plenty of water and the occasional pint of milk.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Ideal day off? Spending time with his family.

🏎️ A skill he’d love to master? Becoming an F1 driver. We might struggle to find him a company vehicle fast enough!

⚽ Favourite sport? Pretty much all of them! Cricket, football, F1, darts and snooker are particular favourites. He’s also a Manchester United fan, but we won’t hold that against him! 😂

With four years at Cotswold Hill and plenty of experience keeping things running at Birch Hill Quarry, Trevor is an important part of the team.

🔨 Finish the Job Properly

There’s an old saying, “Don’t spoil the ship for a ha’p’orth of tar” and it feels very fitting here.

This 4-way weathered pier cap is the finishing touch to a gate pillar, but it does far more than simply make it look complete.

The sloping faces are designed to help shed rainwater away from the masonry below, helping to protect the pillar from unnecessary weathering over time.

A small detail, but an important one when you want the whole entrance to look right and stand the test of time.

🏛️ Another Look Behind the Craftsmanship at Tintern Abbey 🪨

Here are a few more photographs from our work at Tintern Abbey, this time showcasing the creation of a beautifully crafted curved label mould, also known as a hood mould.

As the name suggests, a hood mould acts like a protective hood over an archway, helping to throw rainwater clear of the masonry below while also providing an elegant decorative feature. Every piece was carefully crafted to achieve the correct curve, profile, and finish, ensuring it complemented the surrounding stonework perfectly.

Projects like this are a wonderful example of traditional stonemasonry, where craftsmanship, precision, and premium Forest of Dean stone come together to create architectural details that will stand the test of time. ✨

⛪ A Beautiful Addition to Brecon Cathedral 🪨

We’re pleased to share that the bespoke font base we crafted is now in place at Brecon Cathedral and looking spectacular. ✨

Handcrafted from premium natural stone, this bespoke piece was created as part of the ongoing repair works, and we’re proud to see it installed in such an iconic and historic setting.

A privilege to play a part in preserving history.
For this project at Tintern Abbey, Birch Hill Quarry produced the new stone corbel tables, carefully crafted to match the original medieval masonry.

A corbel table is a row of projecting stones built into a wall, creating a solid platform that supports the masonry above.
This ingenious method allowed the original builders to step the construction outwards and continue building at a different level while safely transferring the weight back into the wall.

Hundreds of years later, the same principles of precision stonemasonry are still being used. Producing replacement corbel tables for such an iconic historic site is a testament to the skill of our craftsmen and the enduring quality of Forest of Dean Pennant sandstone.

Preserving the past with traditional craftsmanship for future generations.
