At Cairnhill, we’re proud to reflect on some of our long-standing partnerships, and one that we are especially proud of is our support for Strathaven Miniature Railway, home to Scotland’s oldest continuously running miniature railway in Strathaven Park.
For over 50 years, the society has been helping keep the spirit of steam in service, operating steam, petrol, and electric locomotives whilst creating a space where engineering knowledge can be shared across generations. From testing and maintenance to restoration and operation, the railway provides members with hands-on experience and keeping traditional model engineering skills firmly on the right track.
We’re honoured to have played a part in the society’s journey. After many years without a tunnel, Cairnhill designed, built, and installed the current tunnel and extension to mark the 75th anniversary of the railway operating in the park, helping to ensure the railway continues full steam ahead for future generations. In recognition of our contribution, the organisation commemorated Cairnhill in a very special way by naming a locomotive ‘Cairnhill’ in our honour.
The Cairnhill is a serviced and maintained 5” gauge steam locomotive, built in a 0-6-0-wheel configuration, and is primarily used to introduce junior members and learners to the world of live steam. From understanding basic knowledge to developing practical skills, it helps inspire railway enthusiasts and engineers alike.
Much like our railways themselves, preserving engineering heritage and investing in local communities is something we believe should always keep moving forward. We are excited to continue supporting Strathaven Model Society and help to ensure this railway tradition remains for many years to come.
