Leafield's team have been pulling their weight today by eating lots of delicious cake and savouries in support of the Macmillan Cancer charity. Even with Sally the organiser asking people to limit the amount of goodies they brought in, the volume still outmatched our capacity to consume! Thanks to everyone who supported and a nice bank transfer now off to Macmillan Cancer Support.

LONG RANGE ACOUSTIC DEVICE (LRAD)
Here is some footage of one of our Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRAD). This is the smallest model of the range the LRAD 100X. It is can be mounted on a tripod as shown here, fitted to a vehicle or boat with a choice of magnetic and vacuum mounts or even carried on your back in its own pack. The 100X is used in a wide range of roles across the emergency services and military. It also has roles in the commercial sector where you need to get a message across clearly fighting background noise. This model will reach out to a maximum of 700m and is crystal clear. It also has an alarm mode that sets of a penetrating siren that will deter protesters, pirates or terrorists. There is an MP3 player fitted that you can prerecord messages on, perhaps the same one in a number of languages.
The first video clip shows it at distance (you can hardly see it) with the sound coming across loud and clear. No one is going to be a say they didn’t hear you message! We then come in a bit closer so that you can see the device close up.
This isn’t a run of the mill old style speaker with an electromagnet pulling a speaker diaphragm in and out. The LRAD system utilises an array of piezo electric tubes that vibrate at two frequencies. These then combine when they strike an object (your listeners ear) to form an audio frequency. This technology enables LRAD to produce a focused beam of sound out to, depending on equipment, 600 metres for the LRAD 100X to 5 kilometres for the LRAD 1950XL, there are a number of different models in-between.

The larger LRAD systems have a range out to 5km. Leafield Logistics & Technical Services Limited is the UK sole distributor and can provide advice and arrange demonstrations at the customers sites or at our own location. The LRAD system is manufactured to work in extreme environments and is in service: on all US combatant ships and 25 other navies’ vessels, in the US and other Armies, a large number of police forces and civil defence organisations.
