How do you spend your day? Mine sometimes involves being on scaffolding looking at bricks… 🧱

A recent site visit to a Grade II listed property in Leicestershire where the original natural slate roof had previously been replaced with much heavier concrete roof tiles.

The increased roof loading has contributed to movement of the external walls, resulting in two of the three brick arches failing.

I surveyed and measured the arches and assessed the original imperial bricks for potential reuse.

The solution? Bespoke replacement arches will be made using brick slips cut from the original bricks, helping to retain the character of the building.

𝗔𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝘆 🧱

First, a site visit to a project in a conservation area where I’m working with the architect H-architectural Consultancy Ltd. This new build needs to blend in with the local brick buildings, so I took several samples for the client to choose from.

Then two brick matches for an extension that -architectural Consultancy Ltd. This has designed.

Couldn’t resist stopping to take a photo of the pretty wildflowers planted by 🌸

Then one final brick match for Leigh & Rose Construction LTD, where they’re repairing a warehouse wall that someone reversed into 🤦🏼‍♀️

Great to see the Field Head Lane development in Birstall taking shape🧱

Peak Project Solutions was brought in to help source a brick that met both the design requirements and the project's budget.

Thanks to LBT Brick Brick & Facades for their support with the supply of over 2000 bricks, and to everyone at Construction Dynamics (North) Ltd for the opportunity to be involved.

It's always rewarding to see the products we've helped source arrive on site and become part of the finished development.

We look forward to seeing the project progress.

On Wednesday I attended the Get More From Your Smartphone workshop for small business owners, part of Chesterfield Borough Council’s Innovation Support Programme.

Thank you to SA Photography Scott Antcliffe for sharing some brilliant tips and techniques on getting the most from our smartphone cameras.

Who knew you could take photos on an iPhone using the volume up button? 🤷‍♀️ Or that simply turning your phone upside down could completely change the result! 🤩

It was great to put new skills into practice - here are a few of my favourite shots from the practical session.

Also great to meet Elizabeth Rosario who kindly gave me a copy of her book - Before Breaking Point, which I’m looking forward to reading.

We’re really pleased to share Ruth Wightman’s podcast debut 🎙️

Ruth, also known as , joined Nicolaidis, host of Our Built Heritage and MD of VA Heritage, to talk about all things masonry, from sourcing the right materials through to delivering complex heritage schemes like Claridge's and Great Scotland Yard Hotel.

Both are Grade II listed and come with their own challenges, from planning constraints to working within existing structures. It’s a great insight into how those challenges are overcome in practice, without compromising the design.
