We put our batteries through ten of the worst things that can happen to a lithium battery. Then we had someone independent write down what happened.
TITAN batteries are now type tested to IEC 62619 & 62620, the international safety standard for lithium batteries in marine, off-grid and industrial use, and is quickly becoming a requirement for marine insurers.
Here is the part that actually matters. Plenty of brands quote a standard their cell supplier holds, which tells you something about a component inside the battery rather than the battery itself. We sent finished TITAN packs to an independent laboratory and had them tested as complete products, under our own name. One of very few UK brands to have done it that way.
Overcharged well past the cut off, on voltage and then on current. Terminals shorted at full charge. Crushed in a press. Force discharged. Driven past its temperature limits. Dropped. And the hard one, a short circuit forced inside the cell itself, which is the failure behind most lithium battery fires.
No fire. No explosion. Passed all tests.
It counts for most on the water. ISO 23625, the standard for lithium batteries in small craft, asks for IEC 62619 and IEC 62620 together. We hold both, and the Boat Safety Scheme and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency point the same way. So if your insurer or your surveyor has ever asked what your battery is actually tested to, there is now a signed document that answers it.
