🐾 Remembering a Very Special Member of Our Team – Tess ❤️

This week, we’re sharing something a little different and remembering one of the most loved members of the Cotswold Hill family, our wonderful Tess.

After many happy years by our side, sadly the time has come for us to say goodbye to her. 💔

Tess has been so much more than a four-legged member of the team. She’s been a familiar face around the quarry, a companion, a supervisor and, of course, our very own model!

📸 Over the years, Tess has regularly stepped in to help us demonstrate the size and scale of our stone products, although we’re fairly sure she considered posing to be one of her more important responsibilities.

Away from her modelling career, Tess has loved long walks along the Thames Path, sunbathing whenever the opportunity presented itself and, perhaps most of all, sleeping! ☀️🐾

She’s also been known for the occasional daredevil stunt, giving us plenty of memories and stories along the way.

Tess has brought an enormous amount of character and happiness to Cotswold Hill over the years, and she will be very sadly missed by everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing her.

Thank you for all the memories, Tess. You’ll always be a very special part of our team. ❤️🐾

🪨 From Mixed Finishes to One Beautiful Cotswold Stone Exterior

Don’t like the existing brickwork, render or blockwork? Natural stone cladding can completely change the appearance of a property without the need to rebuild the walls.

That’s exactly what’s happening on this project. The existing property has a mixture of render, brick and block, along with some major alterations including windows being blocked up. The aim is to bring all those different surfaces together with one consistent natural stone finish.

We supplied 90m² of Sawn and Split Cotswold Stone Cladding, along with 27 linear metres of ‘L’ shaped cladding to wrap around the windows and external corners, helping to create the appearance of traditional full-depth stonework.

The pictures show just part of the project taking shape, and already you can see what a difference the Cotswold stone makes.

👋 Meet the Team | Tim Wright

Meet Tim, our Production Manager at Cotswold Hill Quarry, although as he puts it, he gets called all sorts!

Tim has been part of the quarry for so long we’d need more than a few fingers to count. He’s been here pretty much since the age of 18, so it’s fair to say there isn’t much about natural stone, production or the day-to-day running of the quarry that he doesn’t know.

🤝 Favourite part of the job: Meeting clients, getting to know them and making sure they’re happy with our products and service. He also gets great satisfaction from seeing the workload completed and things ticked off in the diary.

🌍 Most memorable project: A major project supplying containers of natural stone slips and masonry to Japan. Challenging at the time, but incredibly satisfying to see it completed.

🚜 Tool of choice: These days, definitely the excavator. The axe and sledgehammer can stay where they are!

🥣 Go-to lunch: Homemade soup with plenty of chunky veg.

🌿 Perfect day off: Wellies on, out in the countryside and enjoying country pursuits, with a bit of clay shooting whenever possible.

🎯 Skill he’d instantly master: Whistling properly, according to Julia!

🛠️ Skills: A jack of all trades, master of none.

🏉 Interesting fact: Tim was captain of hockey, rugby and football at school. Not because he claims to have been the best, but because, in his words, he likes to think he’s always been a team player.

And that probably sums Tim up perfectly.

🪨 Bespoke Stonework for the Home

A lovely example of decorative masonry created for a client’s property.

For this project, we produced a double house sign carefully inlaid into a natural stone boulder, creating a distinctive and completely individual entrance feature.

Using natural stone gives every piece its own texture, character and presence, while the bespoke detailing makes it truly personal to the property.

👋 Meet the Team | Christopher Scrivens

Meet Christopher Scrivens, one of the talented stonemasons at Cotswold Hill Stone & Masonry, who has been part of the team for an impressive 8 and a half years. 🪨🔨

Christopher particularly enjoys working with old and historic buildings, from churches to mansions, repairing and restoring stonework knowing that what he puts back could be there for generations to come.

🏛️ Favourite type of project?
Christopher couldn’t choose just one. He loves being around old buildings, the stories they hold and the unique character and energy that comes with them.

🔨 Favourite tools?
Keeping it traditional with a dummy and chisel. Less dust, traditional craftsmanship and perfect for letter carving and more intricate work.

🍵 Go-to drink?
A herbal tea made by his wife, although apparently a biscuit sometimes sneaks in too!

🌿 Perfect day off?
Being out in nature, sitting beside a stream in the woods, playing his guitar and meditating.

💭 One skill he’d like to master?
Patience, so he can give himself the time to learn even more new skills.

🎸 And something you might not know…
Christopher is also a singer-songwriter and has recently finished a new album, as well as writing a movie theme song.

🏉 A Rugby Ball Carved in Stone, For a Very Special Cause

A brilliant piece of Cotswold Hill Stone & Masonry history.

As part of the fundraiser, two very special stone rugby balls were carved at Cotswold Hill Stone & Masonry, creating a lasting reminder of a campaign that brought the whole community together.

The fundraiser saw an oversized rugby ball travel far and wide, from an RAF parachute jump and Gloucester Rugby, to Jonjo O’Neill’s training yard, local schools, nursing homes and even a trip around the quarry!

Cotswold Hill Stone & Masonry was proud to sponsor the campaign, which went on to raise an incredible £21,000+ for Kate’s Home Nursing, helping support its free hospice-at-home nursing care. ❤️

One stone rugby ball was kept by Stow on the Wold RFC as a lasting memento, while the other was auctioned at a fundraising event.

A fantastic local cause, an amazing community effort and a very special piece of Cotswold Hill history. 🏉🪨
