Machined In-House to Keep Production Moving

When lead times become the biggest risk to production, manufacturing critical components in-house can make all the difference.

This stub shaft was reverse engineered and machined by our engineering team from 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel, providing excellent corrosion resistance, high strength and long service life in demanding operating environments.

With OEM lead times proving too long for the customer's requirements, our machining department produced the replacement component in-house, ensuring downtime was minimised and the equipment could be returned to service as quickly as possible.

Another overhaul completed and ready for service.

This 160kW oil cooled Elin motor has undergone a full overhaul through our workshop, including complete strip and assessment, bearing replacement, inspection of the stator and rotor assembly, refurbishment works and final testing prior to dispatch.

Oil cooled motors play a critical role in high demand industrial applications where thermal management and reliability are essential. Carrying out a full inspection and overhaul helps extend operational life, improve reliability and reduce the risk of costly downtime.

A great effort from the team to return another large machine back to operating condition.

Working alongside an automotive customer and the OEM motor manufacturer in Italy, the GEM team recently assisted with the investigation of a fault on a relatively new motor supplied into service.

Following detailed discussions with the OEM, we were provided with a full dismantling procedure and tasked with carrying out diagnostic testing and inspection of the unit here in the UK.

After a controlled strip and assessment, our engineers identified an issue on one of the winding phases, clearly highlighted during surge comparison testing.

Using specialist test equipment and detailed electrical analysis, we were able to provide the OEM with a full technical report to support further investigation at factory level.

The motor has now been returned to the manufacturer in Italy following our diagnosis.

A good example of the importance of detailed fault-finding, technical reporting and collaborative engineering support between end user, OEM and repair partner.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and supported the Rotamec Charity Golf Day at Wedmore Golf Club!

It was fantastic to see our customers, suppliers and colleagues come together for a great day of golf, networking and fundraising in support of Children with Cancer UK, our Charity of the Year.

From the first tee to the final raffle draw, the generosity and support shown throughout the day was incredible. Whether you entered a team, donated a raffle prize, bought raffle tickets or made a donation through our JustGiving page, every contribution will help make a difference.

This charity is especially close to our hearts, so seeing so many people get behind such an important cause meant a great deal.

Thank you again to everyone who attended, donated and helped make the day such a success. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

This large DC motor came into the workshop showing years of hard industrial service — contamination, wear and general deterioration throughout the unit. After a complete overhaul by the GEM team, it’s now fully refurbished, tested and ready to go straight back into operation.

The difference between the “before” and “after” photos says it all.

Projects like this are a good reminder of the value of repair and refurbishment.

With the right engineering expertise, critical equipment can be restored to a high standard, reducing downtime, avoiding unnecessary replacement costs and extending operational life.

Another quality rebuild completed by the team.

Not one you see every day… and certainly not something many engineers come across now.

This unusual unit — nicknamed the “Dalek” in the workshop — is an older style motor-generator set used on lift applications, combining both an AC and DC machine within one assembly.

The AC side drives the unit while the DC side acts as an internal generator, a clever piece of engineering from its era and a great example of how industrial drive systems have evolved over the years.

A lot of the younger engineers in the workshop had never seen one before, but thankfully the experienced heads knew exactly what they were looking at.

Scope of works completed by the team included:

• Full strip and inspection
• Commutator skim & undercut
• New bearings & brushes
• Full overhaul and reassembly
• Final testing prior to dispatch

Always interesting to work on specialist and legacy equipment like this — keeping older machinery operating reliably is where engineering knowledge and experience really comes into its own.

🌍 World Environment Day – Engineering a More Sustainable Future

Today marks World Environment Day, a reminder that every industry has a role to play in reducing its environmental impact.

In engineering, one of the most effective ways we contribute is simple:
Repair > Replace

Extending the life of existing equipment not only reduces cost — it significantly cuts down on:
♻️ Material waste
⚡ Energy consumption from manufacturing new components
🚛 Transport and supply chain emissions

At the Rotamec Group, we work with customers every day to restore, refurbish, and re-engineer critical equipment, helping them maintain performance while making more sustainable choices.

From motor rewinds and gearbox overhauls to precision machining and component reclamation, it’s all about maximising asset life and minimising environmental impact.

Sustainability isn’t always about new technology — sometimes it’s about making better use of what we already have.

This is why we repair.

A major rewind project at GEM is nearing completion, with one of the most critical stages now underway — the varnish impregnation process.

This is no small task. The stator weighs approximately 1.5 tonnes, requiring adjustments to the lifting setup to safely handle the unit throughout the process.

To ensure the varnish is applied correctly, our winding supervisor designed and manufactured a custom foam base. This allows controlled flow of varnish through the stator core only, ensuring full coverage where it matters most.

The varnishing stage plays a key role in:
⚡Maintaining electrical insulation integrity
⚡Providing mechanical strength to the windings
⚡Supporting long-term operational reliability

It’s this level of detail, combined with in-house expertise, that enables us to deliver high-quality results on large and complex rewind projects.

Another comprehensive overhaul completed by the Rotamec team, restoring this rotary lobe pump assembly back to full operational condition.

Scope of works included:
➡️Complete lobe pump overhaul
➡️Replacement of bearings, oil seals & mechanical seals
➡️Overhaul of the forced air vent system
➡️Full motor and gearbox strip, inspection & rebuild
➡️Clean, rebuild and reassembly using FDA-approved manufacturer components

Rotary lobe pumps are critical in applications where hygiene, reliability, and consistent flow performance are essential — particularly within the food and process industries.

By carrying out a full overhaul using approved parts and in-house expertise, we’ve ensured this unit is ready to return to service with improved reliability and extended operational life.
