Another specialist motor brought back to life at Covelec 🔧

Rather than replacing the unit, our engineers were able to overhaul and refurbish the existing motor, giving this specialist piece of equipment a new lease of life and getting it ready to return to service.

Keeping older DC machines running takes more than an off-the-shelf repair!

These photos are a good example of why general maintenance on DC motors and machines remains so important, particularly when dealing with older equipment where replacement parts are no longer readily available.

This unit arrived with us following a failure on site and, as the first inspection shows, things initially didn’t look particularly promising.

Fortunately, the damage wasn’t as extensive as first feared, allowing our team to carry out a comprehensive overhaul and achieve a quick turnaround.

The scope of work included:

Full overhaul of the unit
Wash and stove of the fields and armature
Full commutator skim and undercut
Re-banding and balancing of the armature
Manufacture of new brush boxes from samples
Full re-insulation of the brush gear
Replacement bearings and brushes

One of the biggest challenges with machinery like this is obsolescence.

These are older British-manufactured DC motors, and many of the original spare parts are simply no longer available. Rather than treating that as the end of the machine's working life, components can be reverse engineered and manufactured from existing samples to keep critical equipment operational.

It’s also why planned inspection and maintenance can be so valuable. Catching deterioration in the commutator, brushes, brush gear, bearings and insulation before a major failure can potentially prevent considerably more extensive damage.

For businesses still relying on legacy DC machinery, obsolete doesn’t necessarily mean unrepairable.

It’s what’s on the inside that counts…

From the outside, this 45kW electric motor looked to be in reasonable condition. Open the terminal box, however, and it was a very different story.

Loose electrical connections had generated excessive heat within the terminal box, causing the insulation on the motor leads to deteriorate and melt away. Eventually, this resulted in the phases shorting together and the premature failure of the motor. 💥

It’s a useful reminder that seemingly small maintenance issues can ultimately lead to costly equipment failure and unplanned downtime.

Regular inspection of motor terminal boxes, connections and general electrical condition can help identify developing problems before they reach this stage.

Another good example of why preventative maintenance is about more than what you can see from the outside.

Three Vogel bevel gearboxes are ready for the off following full overhauls by the team at NET!

These particular gearboxes form part of crammer units, an important part of the extrusion process. The crammer units feed compound into the extruder, where the material is processed into pellets ready for use in the manufacture of profile extrusions.

It’s a good example of how gearbox reliability can have a direct impact on the wider production process. Keeping these units maintained and in good working order helps keep material moving and production running as it should.

All three have now been fully overhauled and are ready to head back into service. Great work from the NET team. 👏

When downtime hits, the response matters. ⚙️

A 6:30am call on a Saturday to Darryl Beecham from a local feed mill marked the start of an urgent job for the Rotamec Group team. A geared motor on one of the site’s mixers had failed, bringing a critical part of the operation to a standstill.

With downtime mounting, our teams got straight to work. Following several calls, a suitable replacement geared motor was sourced and made available through a same-day emergency build, before being shipped directly to site that evening.

At the same time, our Rotamec site engineers were placed on standby and mobilised to meet the replacement unit. Working through Saturday evening and into the early hours of Sunday morning, the failed geared motor was removed and the replacement successfully installed – no small task given its location right at the top of the mill.

The result? The customer was limited to just one day of downtime and able to get their operation moving again.

This job is a great example of what our Group-wide capability is all about: combining rapid sourcing, engineering expertise and on-site support when our customers need it most.

There’s always something satisfying about seeing a tired piece of equipment given a new lease of life!

This automatic gate motor gearbox arrived with the team at CovElec looking like it had certainly earned its keep. Years of exposure, dirt and general wear had taken their toll, but underneath it all was a unit worth bringing back to life.

Following a full workshop overhaul, the gearbox has been cleaned, refurbished, reassembled and refinished, ready to return to service.

It’s a great example of why repair and refurbishment can be a valuable alternative to replacement – particularly where older or specialist equipment is still perfectly serviceable once given the right engineering attention.
