Story Contracting has a wealth of construction project experience in the following sectors: industrial, commercial, renewable energy, utilities, local authorities, highways, maintenance and education. Our rail expertise includes earthworks, stations, lineside, building, bridges and track. Demolition of the existing masonry arch structure at Muriespot Bridge (OB 090/ 106) for Scotland's Railway is now underway, marking a key milestone in this bridge replacement project.

Once completed, the new single-span pre - stressed concrete structure will provide a safer, more resilient asset with a 120-year design life while supporting future enhancements to the railway network.

Current progress includes:
🔹 1,500 tonnes of material to be removed during demolition
🔹 Over 3,560 hours worked across eight shifts
🔹 800 tonnes of stone to be installed to reinstate embankments

As work continues at the future Cleator Moor Community Hub, our team is beginning to uncover the character and history hidden within the building.

Working on behalf of Cumberland Council, the early stages of the project have revealed a number of original architectural features, including parquet flooring, an original library archway, fireplaces and decorative ceiling roses. These discoveries offer a fascinating glimpse into the building's past and, wherever possible, will be carefully preserved and restored as part of its transformation.

The project forms part of the wider Cleator Moor Town Deal programme and will breathe new life into underused buildings, creating a vibrant community space while celebrating the heritage that makes the site unique.

🏆 A fantastic night at the CECA North West Annual Awards 2026!

We were proud to win Project of the Year (£1m-£5m) alongside KeolisAmey Metrolink for the collaborative delivery of the Whitefield Tunnel project.

We were also delighted to receive Highly Commended recognition for the Grizebeck Improvement Scheme with Westmorland and Furness Council in the Project of the Year (£5m+) category, while our collaborative work with Cumberland Council was also recognised with a Highly Commended award.

A great reflection of the partnerships, teamwork and commitment behind these projects. Congratulations to everyone involved. 👏

Our team recently completed the transformation of the Low Hurst National Highways Depot on behalf of Kier 🙌

The scheme included the demolition of the existing salt barn and office buildings, installation of new drainage infrastructure including an interceptor and piling mats, construction of a new two-storey office building with associated car parking, and refurbishment of the existing vehicle maintenance building.

🤝Delivered through close collaboration with the client, the project has enhanced the depot's facilities and infrastructure, creating a modern, fit-for-purpose environment to support National Highways' operations.

A major milestone has been reached at Cardenden Station, with the new footbridge and lift structure successfully installed.

Delivered for our client Scotland's Railway, the works form part of the project to electrify and modernise the railway in Fife.

During a single weekend possession, 78 tonnes of steelwork were installed across nine crane lifts. Once complete, the new bridge and lifts will provide step-free access between platforms while creating space for the overhead wires that will power future battery-electric trains.

A fantastic achievement by the project team and supply chain partners. 🚆

We're pleased to announce that Story Contracting has been appointed to the Pagabo National Framework for Civil Engineering, Infrastructure and Enabling Works 2026. The £4.29bn framework is Pagabo's largest infrastructure procurement offering to date and will run for four years.

Through the framework, organisations across local and central government, the NHS, housing, education and blue light sectors can access our expertise to deliver civil engineering and infrastructure projects. It provides another route for us to work collaboratively with clients and partners, creating lasting value for the communities we serve.

We're looking forward to the opportunities ahead and building on our track record of delivering high-quality infrastructure projects across the UK.

Earlier this week, we welcomed our Eastern team and over 40 representatives from our valued supply chain partners for a Safety Stand Down Day at the Royal Armouries in Leeds 🤝

The event provided an opportunity to come together, reflect on the year so far, share lessons learned, and discuss how we can drive continual improvement in our health, safety and wellbeing performance. Through open discussion, attendees explored personal commitments, reviewed improvement plans, shared best practice, and considered how greater collaboration can help us achieve our shared goals, while also receiving updates on our future pipeline of work.

🙌Thank you to everyone who attended, reinforcing our shared commitment to ensuring everyone gets home safe and well every day. We'd also like to thank Steve Richardson from The Transpennine Route Upgrade and inspirational speaker Mick Loughran for sharing their experiences and helping make the day such a success.
