This Caterpillar 3126 HEUI is losing around 10 litres of engine oil a day, but with no increase in exhaust smoke.

With the turbo looking less likely, one of the main suspects is now injector O-ring failure.

On these HEUI engines, a failed or badly seated middle or lower injector O-ring can allow high-pressure engine oil to leak into the fuel gallery, contaminating the fuel return and sending that oil back to the tank.

Found the oil leak in the engine driven raw water pump.
Took it off, spun it round, and the O ring was flatter than my motivation on a Monday morning.
Also looked like someone had previously introduced it to a generous amount of silicone.
Creative, but not ideal.

The plan: quick check before they head to Scotland.
Reality: archaeological dig for ancient impeller remains.

Pulled the raw water feed off the intercooler and found one old vane lodged in there.
Kept digging and found three fins in total.

The current impeller had all its vanes, so these were fossils from a previous one.

A reminder that when an impeller lets go, it doesn’t just disappear. It goes off on a little adventure through your cooling system.

Creamy oil usually means water has got where it shouldn’t.
