Sutro Group, in partnership with IAG, has delivered a large-scale wind turbine inspection programme across Europe and Canada, covering turbines from 120m to 160m in height.

Our two-person teams combined rope access with advanced PAUT inspection to assess hubs, tower welds, blades and structural bolting, applying the same encoded scanning methodology on every site. That consistency meant clients received comparable data whether the turbine was in Poland or Spain.

No shutdown. No draining. No confined space entry. A robot that inspects the tank while it stays in service.

Working with our partner , we completed an autonomous robotic inspection of a UK diesel storage tank without draining the product or taking the facility offline. Square Robot's submersible platform, certified for hazardous environments, captured high-resolution ultrasonic data on the tank bottom while fully submerged — data our team then turned into an actionable maintenance plan.

Our Technical Director Richard Denmead has called it exactly the kind of field-proven technology that fits how Sutro already works, at a time when UK industrial inspection is modernising fast.

When should structural steel actually be inspected?

Steel doesn't fail without warning. Corrosion, fatigue cracking and connection wear all show up before a structure becomes unsafe. The question is whether anyone's looking on a fixed schedule, or only after something prompts a look.

Three things drive the right frequency:

1. Age and environment. Older structures, or those in corrosive or coastal conditions, need closer attention.
2. Any change in load or use.
3. Visible deterioration, such as surface corrosion or connection movement.

Inspection itself usually combines a visual survey with NDT: magnetic particle inspection for surface and near-surface cracking, and ultrasonic testing for wall thickness. Access is by rope access or drone survey, depending on the structure.

The goal isn't inspecting everything constantly. It's knowing which parts of a structure carry the risk, and checking those on a schedule that matches how quickly that risk changes.

Preparing a vessel for NDT starts well before the inspection itself.

Our confined space team completed a full internal clean of a Nickel Decomposition vessel, removing process residue and buildup to give clear, unobstructed access to the vessel walls. Our NDT technicians carried out the inspection itself the very next day — same team, same site visit, no waiting on a separate contractor to mobilise.

Both stages were carried out under full confined space procedure, with atmospheric monitoring and a rescue plan in place throughout.

That's the value of running clean and inspection under one team: less time on site, less coordination overhead, and inspection data that's only as good as the access it was collected through.

A construction company has been fined £60,000 after a worker suffered life-changing injuries falling through an unprotected roof light — no scaffolding, guard rails, or harness system had been used.

Falls from height accounted for around a quarter of all worker deaths in Great Britain during 2025/26 (HSE). It remains one of the most preventable causes of serious injury in our industry.

Rope access and drone inspection exist to engineer this risk out — removing the need for unprotected access wherever the task allows.

If your current access method leaves anyone exposed to a risk that could be designed out, it's worth a conversation.

Hands-on learning

This summer, we welcomed a Year 13 student from St. Joseph's Roman Catholic School into the workshop for some work experience.

Highlights included flying the Elios 3 drone under guidance, and sitting down with Adam Viney to work through the inspection data it collected, seeing first-hand how raw flight footage turns into a usable 3D model and actionable findings.

It's always a pleasure to give young people a real look at the industry, not just what confined space and drone inspection involves, but the kind of career paths available in it. We hope it was a valuable experience, and we wish the student all the best for the year ahead.

🤖 Autonomous robotic inspection: keeping tanks in service while they're inspected

Sutro Group, in partnership with Square Robot, recently completed an autonomous robotic inspection of a 128ft diesel storage tank in the UK — while the tank remained fully in-service and filled with product.

Using Square Robot's C1D2-certified autonomous technology, the inspection was carried out over 6 days, with comprehensive analysis and reporting delivered within two weeks. The results:

✅ 1,039 hours of confined space entry eliminated
✅ £948,000 in total cost savings
✅ 10,586 lbs of CO2e emissions prevented
✅ Tank remained in-service throughout — no drainage, no production disruption
