Inspecting water infrastructure means getting to places most teams can't.

Submerged tank walls that haven't been seen since commissioning. Confined underground networks where standard UAV technology simply won't operate. Elevated structures that would otherwise mean scaffolding, cost, and delay.

Sutro Group provides integrated inspection services for water utilities across the UK. Our capability covers the full range of access and assessment challenges β€” IRATA-certified rope access, UAV inspection including the Elios 3 for GPS-denied confined spaces, advanced NDT for subsurface corrosion detection and mapping, and underwater robotics for in-service tank inspection without dewatering.

If you're looking to get ahead of hidden deterioration rather than respond to failure, contact our team today:

Working in industrial inspection means health and safety isn't just a policy β€” it's a daily operational reality.

The sectors we work in carry genuine risk. Height, confined spaces, hazardous atmospheres, and complex plant environments are standard features of the job. Managing that risk well is what allows our clients to maintain their assets and our people to go home safely.

That means pre-task planning done properly, a team culture where raising a concern is normal, and using technology to remove people from harm wherever it's practical to do so.

Safety procedures exist for good reason. At Sutro, they're embedded into how we work β€” not a checklist, but second nature.

Sutro Group is supporting No Falls Week 2026 β€” a campaign by the No Falls Foundation to reduce workplace falls from height across the UK.

Here's why it matters to us.

In Great Britain in 2024/25 alone: 35 people lost their lives in falls from height. Up to 44,000 were injured. Over the last decade, falls from height have cost Great Britain more than Β£764 million and 416,000 lost working days.

Falls from height remain the single biggest cause of workplace fatalities in the UK. Behind every one of those numbers is a person, a family, and a team.

At Sutro Group, working at height is part of our daily reality β€” on water treatment sites, industrial plant, power infrastructure, and more. It's why IRATA-certified rope access, rigorous pre-task planning, and a team culture built around raising concerns aren't optional extras. They're the baseline.

If you work at height β€” or procure services from those who do β€” this week is a good moment to ask whether the right standards are in place.

A question we get asked fairly regularly is: should we be using drones or rope access for this inspection?

The honest answer is that it depends on the asset, the data you need, and what you're planning to do with it. Neither is universally better.

🚁 Drones are faster for wide-area visual survey, are excellent for elevated or difficult-to-reach structures, and remove personnel from hazardous areas. Where you need high-resolution visual data across a large structure in a short window, UAV is usually the right call.

πŸ§—β€β™‚οΈ Rope access comes into its own where you need hands-on intervention β€” NDT techniques that require direct surface contact, repairs, or detailed inspection of specific weld locations. It's also the right choice in GPS-denied or electromagnetically challenging environments where drone operation becomes unreliable.

In practice, many of our projects use both.

The Elios 3 provides the initial survey and access intelligence; rope access technicians follow up on the areas that require closer attention.

Our UAV and rope access teams work together as a single integrated operation. That's not common in this industry, and it's one of the things that makes a genuine difference to how efficiently a project gets done.

Have a project where you're unsure which approach fits? Get in touch and we'll work out the best solution for your inspection.

Corrosion under pipe supports (CUPS) is one of the most severe β€” and most consistently underinspected β€” threats to pipeline integrity across industrial facilities.

The problem is straightforward: where a pipe rests on a support, moisture becomes trapped. Over time, corrosion develops in the contact zone, hidden from routine visual inspection. By the time it's visible externally, corrosion can already be significant.

Standard inspection methods often miss it entirely. Detecting CUPS accurately requires either lifting the pipe β€” costly and disruptive β€” or using inspection technology capable of assessing wall thickness without physical access to the contact area.

At Sutro Group, we work with HOMC (Higher-Order Mode Cluster) technology to detect CUPS without removing the pipe from its supports. It's non-invasive, accurate, and deployable across a wide range of pipe diameters and support configurations.

If hidden corrosion in your pipework is a concern β€” or if you're not sure whether it could be β€” we're happy to discuss your assets.

Rope access gets used as a catch-all term, but there's a significant difference between having operatives who can abseil and having a fully IRATA-certified team.

IRATA certification means every technician has been independently assessed to a recognised international standard β€” not just trained in-house. It covers technical rope work, rescue procedures, and safe working at height across the full range of industrial environments.

For clients in oil and gas, power generation, and water utilities, that distinction matters. It affects your liability, your insurers, and ultimately whether the job is done safely and compliantly.
At Sutro Group, all our rope access operations are IRATA-certified. It's the baseline we work to, not a selling point we wheel out.

If you're procuring rope access services and want to understand what you should be asking suppliers, feel free to get in touch.

The UK's water infrastructure rarely gets the attention it deserves β€” yet it's one of the most relied-upon systems in the country. A significant proportion of the pipe network dates back to Victorian construction, and much of it hasn't been inspected with any real thoroughness in years.

What follows is the kind of problem that builds silently. Corrosion, joint failure, and structural degradation in buried or confined pipework tend to go undetected until something goes wrong. By then, the cost β€” in downtime, repair, and regulatory consequence β€” is considerably higher than the inspection that could have caught it earlier.

We speak regularly with asset managers at water utilities who are carrying out visual checks where advanced NDT is what's actually needed. The gap between what's being done and what the asset condition demands is, in some cases, significant.
The good news is that the tools exist to close that gap. Robotic inspection systems, HOMC, CUPS inspection, ultrasonic testing, and UAV-assisted survey can cover assets that would previously have required costly plant shutdowns or invasive access methods β€” including confined spaces and submerged infrastructure that would once have meant significant disruption to access.

The inspection doesn't have to be disruptive. The failure, on the other hand, always is.

If you're responsible for water infrastructure asset integrity and want to talk through what a modern inspection programme might look like, get in touch.

Most asset inspection programmes have the same blind spot.

Not a lack of technology. Not a lack of expertise. A lack of access.

Scaffolding can only go where the pipework allows. MEWPs and drones have weather limits and shutting down a live asset to get people close enough - The cost and disruption rarely make it viable.

On one recent project, traditional scaffolding would have reached around 40% of the structure. The rest was effectively invisible.

We've been working with HausBots because their wall-climbing crawler robots solve exactly this problem. Deployed externally, carrying GPR, UT and other NDT payloads β€” and doing it without scaffolding, without shutdown, and without putting anyone at height unnecessarily.

For our clients across water utilities, oil & gas, power and industrial sectors, this isn't a theoretical improvement, it's the difference between β€˜inspecting' an asset and analysing it.

We recently completed a loading arm inspection at a jet fuel facility, combining MEWP access, ultrasonic testing, and mechanical inspection across the arms.

The MEWP provided safe, controlled access to the full structure of each arm. UT was used to assess pipe wall thickness and identify any areas of material loss or corrosion. The mechanical inspection covered swivel joints, articulated connections, and coupling assemblies β€” the components under the greatest operational stress in high-cycle transfer applications.

The project was completed safely, on schedule, and delivered a full condition assessment across the scope.

If you have loading arm infrastructure due for inspection, get in touch.

Rope access gets our teams to places that scaffolding can't reach quickly, and cherry pickers can't reach safely.

Flare stacks, vessel internals, bridge structures, wind turbine towers β€” IRATA-certified rope access is often the fastest and most cost-effective way to carry out a detailed inspection at height or in difficult geometry. No weeks of scaffold er****on. No large ground footprint. No unnecessary disruption to operations.

It's a discipline that rewards experience and rigour. Our teams are trained and certified to IRATA standards, and work to the same safety protocols on every job regardless of scale.

If rope access inspection is on your planning horizon, we'd be glad to talk through what's involved.
