πŸ€– Autonomous robotic inspection: keeping tanks in service while they're inspected

Sutro Group, in partnership with Square Robot, recently completed an autonomous robotic inspection of a 128ft diesel storage tank in the UK β€” while the tank remained fully in-service and filled with product.

Using Square Robot's C1D2-certified autonomous technology, the inspection was carried out over 6 days, with comprehensive analysis and reporting delivered within two weeks. The results:

βœ… 1,039 hours of confined space entry eliminated
βœ… Β£948,000 in total cost savings
βœ… 10,586 lbs of CO2e emissions prevented
βœ… Tank remained in-service throughout β€” no drainage, no production disruption

As Richard Denmead, our Technical Director, put it: this kind of collaboration "introduces field-proven innovation... offering our clients a solution that transforms integrity management with improved cost-effectiveness and safety compliance."

At Sutro Group, we recently renewed our ISO 14001:2026 environmental management certification, reaffirming our commitment to minimising environmental impact across every project. In practice, that means choosing inspection methods that reduce waste and disruption wherever possible: UAV and robotic inspection over methods requiring scaffolding materials and equipment transport, and coordinated multi-discipline teams that mean fewer separate site visits and vehicle journeys per project.

As the sector continues to balance operational demands with environmental responsibility, we're committed to delivering inspection solutions that support both.

Confined space work carries risks that don't show up anywhere else on site β€” restricted entry and exit, limited oxygen, and the potential for dangerous gases to build up unnoticed. It's also one of the few environments where getting the rescue plan wrong can be fatal for would-be rescuers as well as the original casualty.

At Sutro Group, our confined space teams are trained to City & Guilds standard and work to the Confined Space Regulations 1997 on every project. That means a rescue plan is in place before entry ever happens β€” not improvised after something goes wrong.

Whether it's a storage tank, silo, duct, or vessel, we assess the space, plan for its specific risks, and keep a trained rescue capability on standby throughout. It's built into how we work, not bolted on as an afterthought.

🏭 Case Study: Cooling Tower Inspection at Dow Silicones, Barry

Sutro Group carried out Global Mechanical Integrity Safety Standard (GMISS) inspections on cooling towers for Dow at their Barry, South Wales facility β€” assessing structural timber condition both internally and externally.

Instead of conventional scaffolding, our Robotic and NDT Inspection teams deployed commercial drone technology, capturing footage for review by Dow's approved Cooling Tower Specialists.

The result: an estimated 3,000 person-hours eliminated in scaffolding work, approximately Β£150,000 in cost savings, and the cooling towers remained operational throughout β€” with no reduction in cooling capacity.

πŸš€ Cutting inspection time by 80%

Internal inspection has always been one of the harder jobs in asset integrity work β€” getting eyes inside a confined structure without dismantling it or taking it fully offline.

At Sutro Group, we use Flyability Elios 3 UAV technology to deliver internal inspection capability that cuts inspection time by up to 80% compared with traditional manual methods β€” without the confined space entry burden that comes with it.

Do you need faster mobilisation and lower costs without compromising on safety?

For inspection, maintenance and repair work at height, rope access gets our teams to the asset faster, with a smaller footprint and none of the build-and-strike time a scaffold requires. Our IRATA-certified technicians work to the same safety standard, on structures from process towers to bridges to offshore platforms.

Get in touch to see if rope access is the right fit for your next project.

Our teams get the best views

Out on wind turbines all summer, making the most of calm conditions and long daylight hours.

We combine rope access and drone inspection to cover the full turbine. Rope access handles close-up blade repair, coating, and structural work at height. For internal blade inspection, the Elios 3 covers a single blade in around 27 minutes β€” compared to 4+ hours with a rover, or up to 2 days with manual entry. Across a full turbine, that's brought inspection time down from 5 days to 1.

If your maintenance window is still open this summer, now's the time to get it booked in.

ISO 14001:2026 β€” Environment

ISO 14001 has just been revised for the first time since 2015.

The updated standard, published in April 2026, raises the bar on climate-related risk, biodiversity and resource management as part of environmental context, and adds a formal process for managing change. That means the certification behind our environmental management is getting more rigorous.

We renewed our own certification to the new standard in May 2026.

It's also now more closely aligned with the same framework as ISO 9001 and ISO 45001, which we also hold, so our certifications continue to work together as one integrated system.

What does this mean for our clients? Nothing you need to do. Our certification continues without interruption, to a standard that's now more rigorous than before.

Another hot week ahead, particularly for our teams across Europe β˜€οΈ

Heat is a workplace hazard, and employers have a legal duty to manage the risk. For outdoor teams like our rope access crews, a heat index chart is a quick way to judge when conditions move from caution to real risk, alongside HSE's own heat stress guidance.

Shade, water, breaks, and knowing when to adjust the pace. Simple steps, taken seriously.

Robotics β€” continuous vs point-sampling

What's actually happening inside a robotic pipe crawler?

Our robotic platforms, including Waygate Technologies' BIKE crawler, travel through the pipe or vessel itself. It's a magnetic wheeled robot, fitted with cameras and ultrasonic probes, that collects data continuously as it moves.

That's different to a manual survey, where readings are only taken at fixed points. If a defect sits between two of those points, it can be missed. A crawler covering the whole run makes that far less likely.

It's also less disruptive. The crawler goes in through existing access points β€” some as small as 300mm β€” often without any excavation or shutdown needed.

If your current pipe or vessel inspections rely on fixed-point sampling, it's worth asking what continuous data could add.
