When you offer as much as we do, the question is not “what can we do for you?”, it’s “what can we not?!”.

TWI was founded in 1946 in the UK as ‘The Welding Institute’, emerging from wartime research to become a leading global research and technology organisation, all over the world.

The Welding Institute Celebrates Tomorrows Engineers Week 2025 ⚙️

It’s Tomorrows Engineers Week 2025, and this year’s theme is ‘Dare To Discover’. Dare to Discover is all about showing young people that you don’t have to get it right the first time and the importance of trial and error in engineering, encouraging students to become robust and adaptable problem-solvers.

As part of this years celebrations, The Welding Institute spoke with Chloe Wing an East Anglian College engineering student and Skills Weld Competitor. Chloe shared her thoughts on what it means to ‘dare to discover’ - reflecting on her own experiences of trial and error during her studies and the valuable lessons she has learnt along the way.

TWI Wales; inspiring the next generation of engineers.

Experts from TWI Wales recently had the pleasure of speaking with 17 enthusiastic STEM students, from St. Joseph's Catholic School and Sixth Form Centre, about the diverse and collaborative world of engineering careers.

Lee Douglas kicked off the session with an overview of TWI's cutting-edge technologies and the role of The Welding Institute. Following this, Ian Nicholson introduced some of the fascinating specialisms in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), complete with videos of robotic inspection techniques and our novel tap-testing work on marine hulls.

Lee and Ian emphasised that a career path isn't always straight, sharing their own journeys to illustrate that engineering is accessible to many. Lee then hosted a team activity, challenging students to build their 'perfect' collaborative problem-solving team - a highlight that sparked many questions.

A key takeaway was the need to move beyond the idea of the solo engineer; emphasising that modern challenges demand collaboration among a versatile team of specialists. It was particularly encouraging to see a slight majority of girls in the group, reflecting a growing and balanced interest in STEM.

We would like to thank Careers Wales for organising this insightful visit. We look forward to continuing our work with them throughout 2026 and are excited to host a small group of these students at our facility in the New Year.
