Mackays of Cambridge

21/02/2026

I filmed this on the final day of Mackay family occupation of 85 East Road Cambridge CB1 1BY.

After 113 years on the same site please excuse me a little nostalgic amble around the old building recalling some of the truly historic achievements over the years.

Believe me this clip could have been much much longer.

We look forward to seeing you all down at our new home Unit 10a Nuffield Road CB4 1TS

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Just finishing off clearing the last few items from Mackays old shop at 85 East Road. I came across this item which we used to make regular use of. When I first started in the shop in the 1970's it was used many times a day.
The need for it has deminished these days. Infact I doubt we will use it very much at our new home in Nuffield Road.
No prizes but anyone hazard a guess as to its use?

We had a fabulous day down at our new site on Nuffield Road. The Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Paul Bristow did us the honour of cropping a steel bar to open the new site. Thankyou Paul we appreciate you battling your way from you home north of Peterborough through the even heavier snow up there, to help us celebrate our move.

Tune in on Sunday at noon
To Cambridge Radio
Mackay’s of Cambridge https://share.google/3UOjXCoe5XXNDvw7J
To hear Lewis Herbert interview three members of the Mackay clan about 113 years of trading at 85 East Road. The business is on the move. Hear about the reasons why and some of the fascinating innovative engineering undertaken within the walls of Britannia Ironworks since Father and Son Donald and Duncan Mackay walked into wheelwrights workshop Allsop and Sons in 1912.
"Fine business you have here sir, we would like to buy it!!" The deal was struck with a handshake over the anvil. They started with the simple business principle 'make ourselves useful and business will come!!'
Listen in on Sunday to find out what happened after that.
