Flywheel Friday!

Happy Friday you lovely lot!!

This 4inch SCC burrell came in to us with a very poorly fitted flywheel. Bore over size, badly fitting flywheel key and huge run out on the flywheel rim to the bore.

The flywheel was bored out then had a new boss machined up and pressed in. The flywheel was clocked up in the lathe and hub bored out to the correct size for the crank. Rim trued up, keyway cut and new flywheel key fitted.

We are always happy to help with an engineering fix. Its not always necessary to replace damaged and worn parts. We can usually rework them! Please get In contact for any work that you need doing.

"Jamie. Do you reckon you could put a roof on my roller?" asks Dec.
"Erm, yer. I don't see why not"

We think that the new canopy on Declan 's Aveling BT roller has finished off a treat.

Luckily we had some of the original canopy irons but everything else has been fabricated in house to the original works drawing including plenty of 1/4 rivets!

For any work that you may need completing, please don't hesitate to get in contact.

Piston rings are one of those things that there is lots of opinions on the right way to do them, tolerances, thickness, ring gap blah blah and so on.

We have had 4 engines through the workshop recently suffering from lack of power, excessive water consumption and a wooshy exhaust beat. All have been found to have piston rings siezed in the piston groove in turn not creating the seal between the ring and the bore.
This little foden came in yesterday with this problem and has had a new set of cast iron rings made, bores honed and new rings fitted. The engine is back in fine fettle ready for the rally season.

For any work that you may need carrying out please don't hesitate to get in contact.

Not everyone has a steady hand to be able to coach line their project, after all it is a skill that is learnt. Finesse Lining Tape offers the ease of a preset tape width so anyone can try their hand at lining.

As demonstrated in the video it's quite simple - apply the tape to your desired project, peel back the transparent layer to reveal two brown tapes leaving a gap as per the width of your line, apply the paint and leave it to go tacky for a short while before removing the tape to reveal your finished line!

Finesse Lining Tape is avaiable in a wide range of widths on our website including the option of double and triple lines.

It's not just steam engines and big lumps of metal we deal with here at Craftmaster Restorations.

We work with owners and their insurers to ensure that we get your vehicle back on the road if you are unfortunate enough to have a accident or mishap.

This 1926 Singer is currently in the workshop having an extensive amount of work after it sadly suffered an engine fire due to a leaking fuel tank.

Work so far has consisted of a full rewire, bonnet and bonnet sides repaired and repainted, sump removed for cleaning and inspection, new spark plugs and HT leads, magneto service, carburettor rebuild and new floor boards to name just some of the work.

Please get in contact for any work that you need carrying out.

Wheels are arguably one of the most time consuming parts of painting an engine. They are fiddly and have a surprisingly large surface area, but the hard work certainly pays off when you put the time and preparation in as shown on the Marshall Portable wheels which have been hand painted.

To begin the wheels were shotblasted and coated with our Anti Corrosive Grey Primer straight afterwards.
The wheels were then filled to create a more uniform, smooth finish and a further coat of Anti Corrosive Grey Primer was applied. Following on with two coats of Mid Red High Build Undercoat and finishing up with two coats of Ayres Red Coach Enamel. Lines were then applied round the hub using our Black Signwriting & Lining Enamel and Finesse Lining Tape.

We're rather happy with the finish on these and can't wait to show you the full results once this is all finished and sat in the spring sunlight as the artificial lighting doesn't do them justice.

Happy New Years All!!

First week back in the workshop after a much needed break and it was straight on with the new canopy build for this lovely little Aveling BTD 8 ton roller.
Luckily, the owner was able to get hold of some of the original canopy irons from the previous owner which has given us a good head start.
New flywheel side front and back uprights fabricated, new canopy ends fabricated and new longitudinal canopy irons made.
Next step is to get the new canopy sheets pressed and then we can get it riveted up and fitted.

If you have any work you need carrying out, please get in touch.

Here we have a little sweetheart that is currently in for restoration. A 3nhp Marshall Britannia portable.

The engine has been fully disassembled for restoration and boiler exam including hydraulic has been carried out. Now in the stages of reassembly but unfortuantly, won't quite be ready for wrapping up to put under the tree.

All hand brushed in Craftmaster Paints coach enamel to original livery, she is already starting to look quite striking.
