Repaired and serviced a Laney LH50 guitar amp.
Fault reported:-
General service & health check - not working well, intermittencies, etc.
Removed rear grill and extracted the amp chassis for inspection.
Visual inspection for distressed/degrading components, solder joints, etc. Checked power resistors, filter capacitors, screen grid and anode resistors OK.
Electrically tested all valves - 1st and 3rd pre-amps reading bad (1st also noisy and microphonic), replaced both with new; 2nd pre-amp, PI and outputs all good.
Checked DC voltages and bias, found very heavy ripple on the B+ supply - suspect C34 power filter capacitor. Removed the main PCB and extracted C34 - confirmed as completely open, f***ed a new 100μF/500V radial electrolytic. Reinstalled the board for continued testing. Voltages and ripple now as expected. Set bias as per service manual.
Noted intermittent/variable buzz especially on the clean channel, traced to the output transformer loose on thecahssis - tightened down satisfactorily.
Checked all pots and jacks functioning correctly.
Checked reverb, loop and footswitching all operating correctly.
Checked output and voltage symmetry OK (77V p-p into a 16Ω resistive load = 46W RMS).
Concluded audio and function checks and tests OK, reassembled.
