We drove up our Semi lightweight Jaguar E-Type to Bicester motion for the great British Jaguar day. Great to display the car as it’s not been seen out in the public before. It’s curently running as a test mule for our 3.9 litre fuel injection resto mod engine we have developed with our own 5 speed gearbox.
congratulations to the Chris Harris team for getting together a really mega collection of Jaguars.

Audi Tradition have unveiled a very special project – the recreation of Auto Union’s 1935 record breaking Lucca car.
It was originally built from a Type A Grand Prix car, with a few modifications and unique streamlined bodywork. With racing driver Hans Stuck at the wheel, speeds of over 200 mph were achieved in February 1935 on an Italian autostrada near the town of Lucca in Tuscany, hence the name.
Crosthwaite & Gardiner were commissioned by Audi to recreate this piece of automotive history, based on numerous photos and various other documents from their archives.
Powered by a V16 supercharged Grand Prix engine, running on a potent methanol mixed fuel, built and tested at our Buxted factory.
Over three years in the making, this project has challenged every department of Crosthwaite & Gardiner’s experienced team. From designers and engineers, CNC programmers and machinists to the technicians responsible for the meticulous assembly of the finished components.

Recently we were asked to make these rear brake calipers for a late 1960’s Formula 1 car to compete at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix.
Working from original samples that had been through a hard life, our design team re-engineered them and produced all the CAD to enable new ones to be produced.
We had new patterns made for the caliper bodies which were cast in aluminium at our Sussex foundry and machined in house. We machined the caliper bridges from solid steel billets and turned the two different sized pistons from stainless steel bar on our CNC lathe.
When the finished components are assembled, the calipers are tested on our brake calliper test pressure rig to ensure they can cope with the extreme demands made on brakes at events such as Monaco, which is taking place this weekend.

COOPER FORMULA JUNIOR 5 SPEED GEARBOX

Another one of our Cooper Formula Junior 5 speed gearboxes has just been completed. We have been producing these gearboxes, as well as component parts for several years. All of the parts are interchangeable with an original gearbox.

The aluminium main case castings and correct magnesium lid castings are all produced in UK foundries using our own pattern equipment. We then machine all the castings at our Buxted factory.

The 5 pairs of straight cut gears, steel selector forks and internals are also made at our factory and we use an open differential to comply with Formula Junior regulations.

After assembly, every gearbox is run on our tester for several hours, checking everything works as it should before delivery.

BUGATTI WHEEL NUTS
We have just shipped another set of our Bugatti wheel nuts. These are faithful reproductions of the original nuts fitted to various Bugattis, such as the Type 35, 43, 51 and 55.
Back in the day, Bugatti would have made these from forgings. Several other companies have made copies, but they are invariably machined from billet, using a milling cutter which produces right angled edges and flat sides.
C&G have made these to be period correct, replicating the radius of the originals. It’s difficult to do, but the result is in the detail.
Finally, they are treated to a process of chemical blacking to achieve the correct black finish.

BUGATTI TYPE 35 CYLINDER BLOCKS

We have just completed these new Bugatti Type 35 cylinder blocks.
The cylinder blocks are very difficulty to cast and are produced for us by the clever people in Hastings.
These are fully machined in our Buxted factory to the original Bugatti drawing. We make and fit the 4 copper oil drain tubes. hone the cylinders and give a final pressure test before delivery.
The Type 35 Bugatti use a pair of these 4 cylinder blocks, mounted in-line on the crankcase to provide the 8 cylinders. Depending on the crankshaft stoke they can be built as either 2 litre or 2.3 litre engines.

The new factory build is coming on well, the roof and walls went up very quickly. Today 30 trucks arrived to deliver the concrete and will be pouring until late evening. Then a team work through the night to give the floor a polish.

Our big 5 axis machines weigh close to 20 tonnes to keep them in place the floor in the machine shop has to be 450mm thick

Our Lister Knobbly has now been sold. Built by C&G using many of our latest parts, including a new wide angled 3.8 Jaguar engine and D Type gearbox. We raced it at this year’s Silverstone Festival where it performed well. The Lister will now have a life of racing in the new owner’s hands.

We recently carried out a complete service of a Maserati transaxle. Nothing particularly noteworthy about this, except the work has been done by the very same technician who first built the transaxle over 25 years ago.
It was part of a batch of brand new transaxles that our man built at C&G in the 1990’s.
All the internal components as well as the new castings for the cases were all machined in C&G’s Buxted factory.
Considering the length of time and the amount of mileage that this has done since it was first delivered, the transaxle required surprisingly little work. Just bearings, lip seals and a dog ring hub needed replacing.
