We kickstarted December with another engineer interview, this time with the wonderful Dr Vincent Giampietro, a Neuroscientist (a brain engineer) from King's College London! 🧠

We found out how Vincent and his team tries to understand how the brain works, how and why it can go wrong and how using machines like an MRI scanner can help with research and seeing what's happening.

Huge thank you to all the pupils who joined us!

We can’t wait to see your pupils’ annotated drawings of how their ideas would work and to read their letters explaining why their design should be built. Every child receives a personalised certificate with feedback from a professional engineer, so make sure to send us your entries once they’re complete!

A huge thank you to James May, an ex-LEGO designer, for joining us for our live Engineer Interview this morning!

We learnt about James’ journey from childhood Lego enthusiast to professional toy designer, his experiences working at Lego and some insight into his current role at Polydron, a UK-based educational toy company.

We had a huge number of teachers and pupils from around the UK tune in and ask the questions that they really wanted to know such as the technical and creative processes involved in designing Lego sets and educational toys.

We can’t wait to see your pupils’ annotated drawings and letters explaining their ideas and designs. Every child receives a personalised certificate with feedback from a professional engineer, so don’t forget to send in your entries once they’re ready!

Behind the scenes industry visit 🤩

As part of our competition, schools get the opportunity to be introduced to an engineer and on occasion, visit one of our partners as part of an industry site visit.

GE Aerospace, one of our Scottish competition partners, have been running these visits for a few years now and today Greenfaulds High School were the first of five schools this academic year to visit ✈️

This engagement introduces pupils to inspiring engineering professionals they can identify with, helps broaden knowledge and career aspirations and dismantles stereotypes. These pupils from Greenfaulds High School then identified a problem in the world around them and came up with a creative, engineered solution to that problem forming their competition entry. We can't wait to see what ideas they came up with!

🌈 Glasses to help you more than just see 🌈

The Rainbow Glasses have colour-changing lenses to help people with dyslexia read more easily by reducing visual stress 👓

The Rainbow Glasses are an idea from Millie, a Year 5 pupil from Light Oaks Junior School in Salford, who wanted to invent a pair of glasses with interchangeable coloured lenses to help people with Dyslexia read easily. The Thales Cheadle team loved this idea and turned it into reality.
