Targeted by more than 350 bombers of the German air force, the Luftwaffe dropped 300 tonnes of bombs on the docks and streets of London’s east end. As the aerial attacks intensified and spread to other cities and towns in the UK, the press used the phrase "the Blitz" to describe them. Based on the German word "Blitzkrieg", it meant "lightning war".
