Behind the scenes at Mawdsleys Pump Services, our team handles everything from heavy industrial systems to vital domestic water supplies. Nathan and Joe recently completed a fantastic, multi-stage project for a rural domestic customer whose water storage system was severely overdue for some TLC.

🔍 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Upon arriving on site, our engineers located the primary Cold Water Storage Tank (CWST) situated at the bottom of the lane, which feeds three holding tanks in the loft space via a submersible pump and 22mm copper pipework. The system was showing its age—complete with an intermittent mercury switch and years of accumulated debris and silt rendering the water undrinkable.

🛠️ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗱
• System Upgrade: Replaced the faulty mercury switch with a modern, reliable, WRAS-approved float switch and weight for precise level control.
• Deep Clean & Disinfection (Primary Tank): Safely emptied the primary tank using a puddle pump onto adjacent land, wet-vacued the interior, and carried out a controlled Sanisol dosing and 1-hour contact check, monitoring ppm levels until safely flushed and refilled.
• Loft Tank Remediation: Accessed the secondary tanks in the loft space, draining and thoroughly cleaning all three tanks (totalling approx. 750 litres) using specialist sponges and wet-vacs, followed by full disinfection and rigorous water testing.
• Excellence in Action: Took water samples for laboratory delivery and successfully test-ran the entire system through multiple cycles to ensure seamless, reliable operation.

The system was left fully operational, compliant, and providing clean, safe water once again! A brilliant collaborative effort by Nathan and Joe, keeping tenant disruption to an absolute minimum throughout.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴. 🌧️

Imagine running a busy care home, only to find out your automated stormwater attenuation tank isn’t actually automated.

For our client’s team, this was a daily reality. A previous contractor had left their storm station completely non-operational. To prevent flooding, the site’s groundskeeper was having to rush out and manually pump out the chamber every single time the high-level alarm sounded.

When Mawdsleys Pump Services stepped in, we knew a temporary fix wouldn’t cut it. A healthcare facility requires robust, reliable, and completely automated flood protection.

Our team conducted a thorough investigation and uncovered why the system had failed:

• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘁: One pump had the entirely wrong guide rail claw fitted, while the second pump had a broken claw, meaning neither could sit securely on their pedestals. To make matters worse, there were no lifting chains attached, leaving the pumps trapped at the bottom of the sump.
• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻: We pulled the pumps from the wetwell, replaced the damaged claws, and brought in a specialist tanker and jetter to clear a massive buildup of heavy silt and debris that was blocking the pedestals.
• 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀: While testing the pumps, we noted low insulation resistance (0.842" M" Ω and 0.412" M" Ω). While both pumps are now back online and running at a steady 2.2A/2.3A, we’ve provided the client with transparent advice that these assets are nearing the end of their natural life cycle.
• 𝗥𝗲-𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: We replaced a failed stop float with a new 20m Ta**us float switch and fitted proper lifting chains to guarantee safe future maintenance.

The Result?
The attenuation tank is fully operational, both pumps are seated perfectly on their guide rails, and the automatic controls are restored. The groundskeeper can finally step away from the alarm panel, and our client has total peace of mind that their stormwater is being managed automatically.

Ever inherited a piece of site infrastructure with zero blueprints, no maintenance history, and absolutely no clue where the pipes lead?
That’s exactly the puzzle our team at Mawdsleys Pump Services was asked to solve at one of our clients in Cheltenham.
We discovered a redundant interceptor chamber that had been stripped of its pumps years ago. There was an outgoing 2” rising main and some electrical ducting, but no onsite knowledge of where the pipe dispersed, whether it was structurally sound, or where the electrical lines entered the main building.

Instead of guessing—and risking the client the massive expense of installing a new pump into a potentially collapsed line—we took a meticulous, investigative approach:
• 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 & 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁: After the tank was emptied, our specialist team secured the area, donned full PPE, and continuously monitored gas levels (maintaining a safe 20.9% oxygen level throughout).
• 𝗖𝗖𝗧𝗩 & 𝗖𝗔𝗧 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: We removed a 2” gate valve to allow our CCTV crew to trace the pipework. We successfully mapped it running 10 meters into a secondary interceptor chamber outside the workshop, before connecting seamlessly into the main sewer—completely clear of obstructions!
• 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻: Using a CAT scanner, our operative traced a mysterious rainwater stack pipe inlet right back inside the workshop.
• 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Our investigation revealed that the old electrical ducting was unviable. By identifying this early, we were able to consult with the site manager, Peter, to map out a new 15-meter electrical supply plan from the main building.

The Result? Total peace of mind for our client.
By investing in proper diagnostic work upfront, the client now has a crystal-clear picture of the project's total overhaul cost. No hidden surprises, no stumbling across costly issues mid-install. We have now accurately specified the exact submersible pump needed based on precise head and flow rates, and mapped out the new ducting requirements.

Our team at Mawdsleys Pump Services recently answered an urgent call-out to a local hospital estate after one of their main sump pumps failed.
Here is how we tackled the emergency:

Rapid Fault-Finding: Our engineer checked the pre-emptied chamber and found Pump 1 offline. Electrical testing quickly traced the issue back to a failed contactor in the control panel.

• 𝗥𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁-𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: Our engineer checked the pre-emptied chamber and found Pump 1 offline. Electrical testing quickly traced the issue back to a failed contactor in the control panel.

• 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀: To be 100% sure, we temporarily swapped the contactors. Pump 1 kicked into gear perfectly, proving the pump asset itself was completely healthy.

• 𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸: We set up our lifting tripod, pulled both pumps, and inspected the impellers. Both were clear of blockages and structurally sound.

• 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱: After cleaning and testing the float switches, we reseated the pumps and left the system safely operational on its automatic cycles.

The Verdict - The hospital ward is safe from flooding, and we've already scheduled a permanent contactor replacement for the next planned service to restore full duty/standby resilience.
