A few weeks ago, the IES team supported one of our customers with the replacement of two sets of drag chains.

The system consisted of a high-level conveyor feeding onto a cross conveyor, with both chains needing to be replaced within a limited production window.

Once the existing chains were removed, we found damage in several areas that had been contributing to recurring jam-ups. During the replacement, we also identified several snagging points along the conveyor paths, which were rectified before the new chains were installed.

Both conveyors were completed within the agreed timeframe, tested successfully and handed back to production with no issues.

A few weeks ago, we completed a 4 day planned bakery shutdown for one of our customers. It was a busy few days for the IES team, with a number of mechanical, fabrication and planned maintenance works completed across the site.

One of the main mechanical jobs involved replacing a bearing on a mixer tipper. To complete the repair, the gearbox and brake system had to be removed to gain access to the bearing, before being refitted and the equipment returned to service.

We also removed 8 damaged prover carriages and replaced them with new stainless steel carriages which had been fabricated in-house at our workshop. The new carriages were installed during the shutdown window, replacing the existing damaged units ready for the plant returning to production.

Approximately 70 cooler racks were removed to provide access for the cooler to undergo a full deep clean. Once the cleaning works had been completed, all racks were reinstalled and the area prepared for production.

Alongside the larger planned works, our engineers completed scheduled preventative maintenance across the plant, while also providing multi-skilled engineering shift cover for the remainder of the site throughout the shutdown.

A good example of the range of support we can provide during planned shutdowns, from in-house fabrication and mechanical works through to planned maintenance and multi-skilled engineering cover.

Another busy shutdown completed and the plant handed back ready for production. A great effort from the team, as always!

One of our customers identified a potential health and safety risk with one of their machines. They have a motion conveyor with various product drops feeding cross-feeder vibros.

The issue identified was that, during cleaning or when clearing a blockage, the high-level product sensor could accidentally be triggered by an operator reaching into the area. This would cause the slide to close, creating a potential trapping point.

The customer asked us to come up with a bespoke guarding solution to protect the front, top and rear of the slide, while incorporating a local air dump rather than stopping the entire conveyor whenever access was required.

Our solution was thoroughly designed, fabricated in our workshop and installed on site. The finished guarding consisted of a fixed panel with a sliding access door at the front, double access doors at the rear, and fixed guarding across the top.

When an access door is opened, the air supply to the local slide is dumped, removing the stored pneumatic energy and preventing the slide from operating. This allows safe access to the guarded area without having to stop the entire conveyor.

Really happy with how this one turned out!

A few weeks ago, we completed this job for a new customer.

The existing mezzanine floor pallet gate had been in place for a number of years and was in need of an upgrade. There was a sizeable gap towards the edge of the mezzanine, along with exposed moving parts that needed addressing.

The customer wanted to go back to basics with a simple manual pallet gate, keeping the operation straightforward while improving the overall safety of the area.

Our team dismantled and removed the existing pallet gate and associated electrics before installing the new manual gate. We also installed handrail and aluminium chequer plate flooring to close off the existing gaps and leave the area with a clean, practical finish.

Another nice little project completed for a new customer.

One year ago, we took on our apprentice, Henri.

When you give a young lad an opportunity, especially someone with no engineering background, you never quite know how it's going to turn out. Will they enjoy the work? Will they fit in with the team? Will they be committed to learning and developing?

A year later, we can honestly say he's been a fantastic addition to the IES team.
His college work has been excellent, the feedback from his tutors has been consistently positive, and we've even had customers comment on his great attitude, willingness to help, and professionalism on site.

Working alongside him every day, we've seen the progress for ourselves. He's always willing to get stuck in, asks questions, wants to learn, and has hit every target we've set for him. That's exactly the attitude we look for.

Over the last 4–6 weeks, since finishing his first year at college, he's been involved in a wide variety of jobs. It's been great to see his confidence grow as he's gained experience across different sites and projects, while learning how we do things the IES way. Working professionally, respecting our customers' procedures, communicating well with clients, and taking pride in the standard of his work.

He should be proud of the progress he's made over the last year. It's genuinely been a pleasure having him as part of the team, and we're looking forward to seeing what the next year brings.

Another interesting project recently completed for one of our longest serving customers.

We were tasked with modifying an oven that had previously been split into two sections. To suit the layout of a newly designed production line, sections had to be removed from both halves to achieve the required overall length.

Once the modifications were complete, both sections were carefully skated into position, aligned, and welded back together to create the finished oven structure.

We love a challenge, and thanks to the hard work of the team, the project was completed safely and successfully. The oven is now ready for the next phase of the installation, with burners and guide rails to be fitted in the coming weeks.

We were recently asked by one of our customers to move a couple of machines in their busy factory to help improve the layout and free up some extra space. This was one of those jobs.

The task involved relocating an aerator machine to a new spot chosen by the customer. As part of the move, we also changed the machine’s orientation and put the surrounding safety fencing back in place to make sure everything stayed safe and compliant.

With only a few hours of downtime, the machine was successfully moved, recommissioned, and back up and running without any problems. Another smooth machine move done and dusted!
