Calling all bakeries and food manufacturers…

Flour dust might be part of the job. Breathing it in shouldn’t be.

HSE identifies flour dust as one of the most common causes of occupational asthma in Great Britain, and exposure should be reduced as far as reasonably practicable.

Everyday processes such as tipping ingredients, mixing, flour dusting and cleaning can release fine particles into the air. Effective controls can include good working practices and appropriately designed dust extraction.

At Dustair, we design and install extraction systems to help businesses control airborne dust at source and create safer working environments.

Don’t ignore the harmful risks of flour dust.

The HSE estimates that 49,000 people who worked during the previous 12 months have breathing or lung problems they regard as caused or made worse by work.

Occupational respiratory disease isn't purely a historical problem. Where processes generate dust, fumes or other airborne contaminants, effective control remains an essential part of protecting the workforce.

Good engineering starts before installation.

HSE’s latest training for Clients, Principal Designers and Principal Contractors reinforces an important point: responsibilities need to be understood from the design stage, not considered once work is already underway - https://bit.ly/4xY7IxX

The same principle applies to dust extraction and LEV.

Effective systems depend on more than selecting equipment. The process, dust characteristics, airflow requirements, layout, access, maintenance and how the system will actually be used all need to be considered before installation begins.

Getting those decisions right early can help avoid costly changes later and, more importantly, ensure the finished system is designed around the people and processes it needs to protect.

At Dustair, engineering starts with understanding the application - because good extraction should be designed into the project, not added as an afterthought.

🚨A Cornwall sawmill and its Managing Director have been fined after failing to comply with health and safety notices, including action relating to the control of wood dust. 🚨

Wood dust is not simply a housekeeping issue. Exposure can contribute to serious respiratory disease, and employers have a responsibility to put effective controls in place. This case is a reminder that health and safety notices are not optional and that responsibility can extend beyond the business itself to individual directors - https://bit.ly/4zMmkm2

For businesses working with timber and other dust-generating processes, effective control starts with understanding where the dust is created and how it can be captured at source.

A properly designed LEV system can form an important part of that control strategy.

Engineered stone can contain as much as 90% crystalline silica. That figure alone should make every fabricator, installer and business owner stop and examine how the material is being selected, handled and processed.

Lower-risk materials are available, but where engineered stone is used, exposure to respirable crystalline silica must be properly assessed and controlled. That means considering the material, the process, the equipment and the effectiveness of the control measures in place.

Dustair supports businesses with professionally designed dust-extraction and filtration systems to help control hazardous airborne dust at source as part of a comprehensive approach to worker protection.

Factories rarely operate in exactly the same way for decades. Machinery is replaced, production lines are extended, workstations are moved and new materials or processes are introduced. Each change can alter the demands placed on an existing dust and fume extraction system.

The fan may still run and the ductwork may remain in place, but that does not necessarily mean the system is still correctly balanced or providing effective capture where it is needed.

When production changes, extraction should be reviewed alongside it. An assessment can help establish whether the existing system remains suitable, requires modification or could benefit from an upgrade.

When was your extraction system last checked against the way your factory operates today?

23/08/2026

Mesothelioma is a rare but devastating cancer, usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Because the condition can take many years to develop, preventing exposure today remains essential.

In non-domestic premises, asbestos risk management begins with knowing whether asbestos-containing materials are present, recording their location and condition, and maintaining an effective management plan. Higher-risk work must be undertaken by an appropriately licensed contractor.

Building ventilation and extraction may form part of a wider workplace air strategy, but they are not a substitute for proper asbestos identification, assessment and specialist control.

Where asbestos is suspected, it should not be disturbed. Seek advice from a competent asbestos professional before maintenance, refurbishment or alterations begin.

30 deaths. Every day.

HSE estimates that occupational lung disease is responsible for around 11,000 deaths every year in Great Britain — the equivalent of approximately 30 every day.

Many occupational lung diseases take years, or even decades, to develop. Today's statistics therefore reflect yesterday's workplace exposures.

That is precisely why controlling harmful airborne contaminants at source matters.

The consequences of inadequate control may not be visible today. But that doesn't mean they aren't developing.
