HSE has published new guidance on working with engineered stone to address risks from silica dust. The guidance applies to anyone cutting, grinding or polishing engineered stone, including kitchen and bathroom worktop fitters and fabricators.

Engineered stone can contain very high levels of crystalline silica and breathing in contaminated dust can cause silicosis, a serious and irreversible lung disease.

We can work with you to take preventative measures. For your dust extraction problems we can provide all forms of ducting, fans and filtration units, including cartridge filters and tubular or envelope fabric filters and wet dust arrestors/scrubbers. For fume extraction systems we can again provide ductwork, filters, gas scrubbers, weld fume extraction systems and electrostatic precipitators. Dustair Ltd can offer COSHH surveys of your plants within the UK whether to do with dust extraction or fume extraction systems.

How compliant will you be if you're inspected? Over the next 12 months, HSE inspectors will conduct more than 1,000 visits to engineered stone fabricators across Great Britain, with enforcement action taken against those failing to meet the required standards. The first inspections are already underway.

The deaths of two young workers from silicosis in recent years prompted calls for action on engineered stone cutting from MPs, trade unions, and medical professionals.

🌬️ When dust is controlled properly, the difference is noticeable. 🌬️

Cleaner air means:

🌬️ Legal HSE compliance
🌬️Better visibility
🌬️More comfortable working conditions
🌬️Reduced cleaning and maintenance
🌬️Healthier employees

Small improvements in dust extraction and filtration can make a big difference to the daily working environment - saving lives and fines.

Many people are now dying from asbestos-related diseases. The Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR 2012) place a duty to manage asbestos on anyone who has control over the maintenance and repair of non-domestic premises. In practice, this means all workplaces that may contain asbestos. Whilst no duty under this regulation falls on operators of rented domestic premises, knowledge of the same standards is useful in order to ensure proper management.

The HSE are running a course - Asbestos management in buildings - which is an introduction to managing asbestos in non-domestic premises to the standards required by Regulation 4 of CAR 2012.

It's almost Clean Air Day - 18th June. This years campaign is urging people to contact their councillor to support clean air initiatives!

Air pollution impacts everyone's health, linked to issues from premature birth and asthma to heart disease and strokes. Vulnerable groups like children and the elderly suffer the most.

Cleaning our air benefits all:
🌍 Improve health: Reducing air pollution leads to immediate health benefits, helping everyone live longer.
💼 Boost economy: Cleaner air enhances productivity, reduces sick days, and lessens NHS burdens.
🌳 Greener cities: Solutions for clean air can also reduce carbon emissions.

Councillors are deciding on community changes. Will clean air be a priority?

Silica dust risks aren’t limited to just construction though...

Silica exposure doesn’t only affect construction sites. We regularly see risks in:

💨 Engineering workshops
💨 Bakeries & food production
💨 Manufacturing & fabrication
💨 Foundries & metal processing

If your process creates dust, fumes or fine particulates, LEV should be assessed and tailored to your operation.

💨 Extraction first. PPE second. 👷

When it comes to controlling dust and fumes in the workplace, Local Exhaust Ventilation should always come first.

LEV removes harmful contaminants at source, reducing exposure before it reaches your workforce. PPE plays an important role but it should never be the only line of defence.

If your business relies heavily on masks or respirators, it may be time to review whether your extraction system is doing enough.

Effective extraction protects:
✔ People
✔ Productivity
✔ Compliance
