Brighter Bridge of Weir

Brighter Bridge of Weir Brighter Bridge of Weir - enhancing our community. Established in 2010, we are a pro-active Group whose aim is to enhance the visual appearance of our village.

With the help of local residents and businesses, the Group seeks out areas in and around the village that have been neglected and aim to enhance them. So far the Group has installed almost 100 street planters, cleared and cultivated more than 10 neglected sites and planted literally thousands of bulbs, shrubs and grasses - you can see some of the results on the Group's web site. Funding of the Gro

up's work is entirely reliant on grant applications, fund-raising events and donations from local businesses and individuals. None of us at Brighter Bridge of Weir is paid, so every pound received is put back into the community. That includes the purchase of goods and equipment, because whenever possible, we spend our funds locally.

IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE
We often say about our weather that if you don’t like it, hang on a minute, it’ll change. But unless you're perched atop one of our higher mountains, it doesn’t really. Not that often, anyway.
This year, however, it’s thrown a lot of curve balls, quite dramatically changing – sometimes every two or three days. Since January we’ve had storms big enough to have names, several heatwaves and a couple of monsoons (well, seriously heavy rain, even by our standards). The combination of heat and rain has caused a flurry of overgrowth all over the place.
So, as we race towards autumn (yep, already) our few volunteers have been out cutting through swathes of overgrowth to ease the passage of travellers along some of our village’s pathways.

THE ITALIAN JOB
Storm Floris put paid to our usual Monday working in the village, so we were able to take advantage of a very generous offer of lunch from Amaretto. A pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by our group, relaxing with good food while looking out at the trees bending in the wind, rather than us. Grateful thanks to all at Amaretto.
We often refer to the support that we get from businesses throughout our village. It’s not just financial - it’s practical, too; donations of compost and plants; the services of landscapers and lumberjacks; farmers with forklift tractors (if you know, you know!). And, yes, sometimes it’s refreshments from the hospitality providers. It is gratifying for us, as it’s an indication that what we do is appreciated. And it’s the sort of thing that makes communities.

PURE RAGIN’
When Brighter Bridge of Weir was formed there was some concern about whether the planters and contents would be the target of anti-social behaviour. Almost 15 years along the road, and there has been very little of that. In fact, almost all of the incidents of damage have been the result of bad weather or vehicle collision. Until now.
This summer’s planting has been the target of theft on a concerning scale. It’s not mindless vandalism. The biggest and best plants have been selectively removed from several planters throughout the village, likely by one person, or possibly more working as a team. This is a slap on the face – not just to the hard working, unpaid volunteers of Brighter Bridge of Weir, but also the many residents and businesses who donate the significant sums of money used to enhance our community.
If anyone reading this knows of or has seen someone stealing those plants, please inform the police. This isn’t minor anti-social behaviour. It is a criminal act contemptuous of the people of Bridge of Weir.
If, by any chance, you have a parsimonious neighbour whose garden is suddenly flourishing with geraniums, begonias and lobelia, have a word.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES
The planning for this spring and summer’s planting began in October last year. The early part went well, and most things arrived on time. But the real trick was dodging the slings and arrows of outrageous weather to get everything in place. A day of cool, windy weather could be followed by one of hot sun, then another of torrential rain. We live in interesting times.
Eventually, things came together and we hope everyone is enjoying the colourful floral displays throughout the village. Thanks again to all those Co-op cardholders who voted for us at the last round of Co-op Community Funding Awards in October. That funding contributed significantly to what you now see.
If it wasn't for the generosity of residents and businesses (and, to be fair, the hard-working volunteers of BBoW), it couldn’t be done.

WHAT HAVE THE ROMANS EVER DONE FOR US?
Well may you ask. We've been putting off changing our cover picture, hoping for some nice weather to photograph the baskets and planters in the village. Hopefully, we'll get a good one before long. Meantime, here's a picture of the guy that July is named after, Emperor Julius Caesar, who shuffled off his mortal coil about 2,070 years ago. Wherever he is now, this writer hopes it's raining.

WET, WET, WET.
It may have rained on the Gala Day Parade, but it didn’t seem to have dampened the spirits of those who cheered the procession along to Houston Road Park. Brighter Bridge of Weir’s volunteers had been out in the days before, making sure that the route looked as good as it could and it did seem to brighten things up a bit.
Local musician Dave Dee was in Livery Walk to jazz things up entertaining the spectators, and he raised some more funds for us while he was there. Thanks Dave!
Rain hats off to everyone who was there and three cheers for the event’s organisers, too.
