From CAD design ➡️ finished stillage.

When a customer came to us with a STEP model of their component, our brief was to create a bespoke stillage designed around the component itself.

The result needed to do more than simply hold the parts.

It needed to:

🔹 Safely accommodate three components
🔹 Protect them during storage and transport
🔹 Provide easy front and rear operator access
🔹 Stack safely three high
🔹 Allow controlled forklift handling
🔹 Make efficient use of transport space

Our Design Team used the customer’s 3D component data to develop the stillage around its actual geometry, incorporating custom polyurethane dunnage to provide dedicated contact and locating points and help prevent metal-to-metal contact.

The finished result brings together protection, handling, stackability and transport efficiency in one bespoke design - delivered within the customer’s required lead time.

Swipe to see the design become reality. ➡️

Bespoke dunnage designed around the component - not the other way around.

When components are damaged during transit, the cost goes far beyond replacing the part. Delays, rework, quality concerns and disruption to production can all have an impact.

For this project, Lowe Special Products designed and manufactured a bespoke stillage with custom polyurethane dunnage, tailored specifically to the customer’s components.

The solution securely accommodates 10 parts across two different component variants, helping the customer make better use of the available space while keeping each component positively located and protected during handling, storage and transit.

The bespoke polyurethane supports help to:

▪️Prevent component movement
▪️Reduce the risk of transit damage
▪️Provide a consistent loading arrangement for operators
▪️Make better use of available storage and transport space

It’s a good example of how a well-engineered handling solution can do more than protect the product - it can also improve logistics and support a more efficient operation.

At Lowe Special Products, we work closely with customers to develop bespoke storage, handling and transit solutions around their components and operational requirements.

Kitting Trolley Refurbishment 🧰

Not every requirement calls for new equipment.

This kitting trolley was recently refurbished in our workshop as a cost-effective alternative to replacement, allowing the customer to extend the life of an existing asset while restoring it to a high operational standard.

The refurbishment included the installation of a new tow bar, repairs to worn components, and a full re-finish with a durable green powder coat.

By repairing and upgrading the original trolley, we were able to provide a practical solution that reduced waste, minimised expenditure, and returned the equipment to service looking and performing as intended.

At Lowe, we support customers with both new-build equipment and refurbishment projects, helping maximise the value of existing assets wherever possible.

From concept to customer.

This custom tyre rack prototype has now left our facility and is on its way for customer evaluation.

Designed and manufactured by the team at Lowe Special Products, this project showcases our ability to develop bespoke material handling and storage solutions tailored to specific operational requirements.

The rack features bespoke one-directional rollers on the base, allowing controlled tyre movement, alongside adjustable upper rollers that can be configured to suit varying tyre sizes and customer requirements. This flexibility ensures the solution can be adapted to the application rather than forcing the operation to adapt to the equipment.

From design and fabrication through to finishing and delivery, every stage was completed with a focus on quality, durability, and practical performance in demanding industrial environments.

We look forward to receiving feedback and supporting the next stage of development.

The HSE's RIDDOR consultation closed last week. The proposed changes will expand mandatory reporting categories for UK manufacturers for the first time since 2013.

More incidents on record. More scrutiny during audits. Higher liability if manual handling risk hasn't been engineered out.

Of the 59,219 non-fatal workplace injuries reported in 2024/25, manual handling is consistently one of the top three causes. In heavy fabrication and assembly environments, the failure point is nearly always the same: component transfers between processes - no fixed lift points, improvised slinging, SWL not marked on the load path.

Training doesn't fix that. Engineering does.

A stillage or lifting frame designed to LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998 compliant, UKCA marked, and built to BS EN 13155 removes the operator decision entirely. The risk is eliminated before anyone touches the component.

When the new RIDDOR categories land, sites still relying on improvised lifts for process transfers will feel it first.
