Developing the skills and capabilities needed for the future of the UK defence supply chain 🛡️

Newburgh Engineering’s Senior Marketing Consultant, Jackie Cook, attended the launch of the Defence Technical Excellence College (DTEC) initiative with RNN Group UK earlier this week.

Held at The Wharncliffe, RNN Group’s training restaurant, the event brought together employers alongside education and training partners to discuss the current and future skills requirements of the defence sector – and how industry can play an active role in shaping the training needed to meet them.

Defence has been part of Newburgh’s story for many years. We are a long-established member of Make UK Defence, with an engineering heritage that includes significant programmes for major defence customers, from manufacturing components for the Storm Shadow/SCALP programme as a Tier 2 supplier to MBDA, to producing hull sections for the Royal Navy’s Spearfish heavyweight torpedo.

Today, defence remains an important sector for Newburgh, and we continue to invest in the capabilities, systems and standards required to support an increasingly secure and technically demanding supply chain.

We have recently achieved Cyber Essentials accreditation, are now working towards Cyber Essentials Plus, and will be applying for Defence Cyber Certification (DCC) ahead of the end-of-year deadline.

Against that background, it was particularly valuable to hear about the plans for DTEC and its focus on developing skills in areas including advanced manufacturing, automation and robotics, digital manufacturing, AI and cyber, autonomous systems, welding and fabrication, and non-destructive testing.

A key theme from the event was collaboration between education and industry. DTEC aims to engage more than 200 employers by 2030, with businesses helping to shape curriculum development, workforce skills, placements, live projects and innovation.

For established defence suppliers such as Newburgh, as well as manufacturers looking to enter or grow within the sector, developing the next generation of skilled people will be vital to creating a capable, resilient and secure UK defence supply chain.

We are keen to bring our experience to that conversation and support the development of the skills and technical capabilities the sector will need in the years ahead.

It’s always valuable to hear directly from businesses across the region about the opportunities and challenges facing UK manufacturing.

On Wednesday morning, our Senior Marketing Consultant, Jackie Cook, represented Newburgh Engineering at the Nottinghamshire East Midlands Manufacturing Network meeting, held at the Holiday Inn Nottingham Castle Marina.

The morning included an update from East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire) on the latest Quarterly Economic Survey. While the previous quarter had painted a more challenging picture, the latest results showed improvements across a number of indicators, including UK and overseas sales and orders, cash flow, workforce expectations and business confidence.

There was also plenty to discuss around the issues continuing to affect manufacturers, including inflation, taxation, business rates, skills and the cost of doing business.

Another useful update covered the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS), which is designed to help eligible manufacturing businesses in Industrial Strategy growth sectors with their electricity costs.

As an engineering manufacturer based in Derbyshire and working across sectors including nuclear, defence, aerospace and energy, staying connected to the wider regional manufacturing community and the issues affecting our industry is important to Newburgh.

From apprentice to Business Systems Manager – welcome back, Jonathan!

We’re delighted to welcome Jonathan Todd back to Newburgh Engineering, where his engineering career first began as an apprentice.

Jonathan went on to receive national recognition with the EEF Midlands Outstanding Achievement by a First-Year Apprentice Award, before building extensive experience across engineering, manufacturing, operations and business systems.

Now, he’s returned to Newburgh as our Business Systems Manager, bringing that experience back to the business at an exciting time in our development.

One of Jonathan’s first priorities is leading the implementation of FactoryMaster, our new Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) system – a significant investment that will strengthen production planning, materials management and operational visibility across the business.

Jonathan’s journey is a great example of the long-term careers that UK manufacturing can offer, and of the value of investing in talented people throughout their careers.

Newburgh Engineering Co Limited has welcomed Master Cutler Professor Keith Jackson CEng CDir and Mistress Cutler Dr Gina Jackson to its Bradwell manufacturing facility as the employee-owned business continues to strengthen its position within the region’s advanced manufacturing sector.

The visit, last week, recognised both the company’s long-standing contribution to UK manufacturing and its recent return to the historic Newburgh Engineering name, reinforcing a heritage that stretches back more than 85 years.

As a licensed Made In Sheffield manufacturer, Newburgh Engineering is part of a globally recognised manufacturing marque associated with quality, integrity and engineering excellence across Sheffield and South Yorkshire. The Made in Sheffield trademark is coordinated by the The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, widely recognised as the voice of manufacturing in Sheffield and South Yorkshire.

Founded in 1939 in the Peak District village of Bradwell, Newburgh Engineering has built a reputation for delivering high-integrity precision manufacturing for highly regulated and safety-critical industries. Historic Derbyshire engineering firm announces Newburgh Engineering Co name as Lord Lieutenant visits Bradwell facility

A Derbyshire engineering specialist with roots dating back more than 85 years has marked the start of a new chapter in its history with a prestigious visit from the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Elizabeth Fothergill CBE.

Nuclear Energy Components welcomed the Lord Lieutenant to its Bradwell facility on Monday, where she toured the site alongside Managing Director Matt Keeley and Operations Director Paul Wildgoose. The visit celebrated both the company’s long-standing contribution to UK manufacturing and the announcement that the business has officially returned to the historic name, Newburgh Engineering Co Limited.

Founded in 1939 in the Peak District village of Bradwell, the company initially expanded to support the wartime effort before establishing itself as a trusted supplier to the British nuclear industry during the 1950s. Over the decades, the business diversified into defence, aerospace, oil and gas, and power generation, building an international reputation for precision engineering and specialist manufacturing capabilities.

Today, the company employs 24 people and continues to invest in advanced manufacturing technology, cellular manufacturing, apprenticeships and employee development, while also supporting local community projects and sustainability initiatives.

Managing Director Matt Keeley said the visit from the Lord Lieutenant came at an important moment in the company’s history. “We were delighted to welcome the Lord Lieutenant to our facility and showcase the skills, innovation and dedication of our team,” he said.

“This business has played an important role in British engineering for generations, and returning to the Newburgh Engineering Co name reflects both our heritage and our ambitions for the future. We are incredibly proud of the legacy that has been built here in Bradwell and excited about the next chapter as we continue to invest in our people, technology and long-term partnerships.”

The company became an Employee Ownership Trust in 2022, giving employees a direct stake in the future success. Recent investments have included new Haas machining technology and robotic automation systems to strengthen manufacturing capability and support future growth.

During the visit, the Lord Lieutenant met employees, learned about the company’s long-standing work in the nuclear and defence sectors, and toured the manufacturing facility to see its advanced machining, fabrication and inspection capabilities firsthand.

Elizabeth Fothergill CBE, Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, said:

“It was a pleasure to visit the team in Bradwell and learn more about the remarkable history of the business and its contribution to UK manufacturing over many decades.

“The company’s commitment to quality, innovation, skills development and the local community is extremely impressive. It is wonderful to see such a strong Derbyshire business continuing to evolve while honouring its heritage through the return to the Newburgh Engineering name.”
