This weekend, the On Freedom’s Wings monument rose into position in Lincolnshire - a powerful new landmark honouring the courageous Lancaster bombers and the crews who flew them.
Barrett Steel has been part of this journey since 2022, when the fuselage was first discussed around the table. From that moment, we knew we wanted to support, pledging initially to donate 10 tonnes of steel to help turn vision into reality.
Nearly 100 tonnes of steel later - from beams and columns to hollow section, plates and Corten - our teams have poured their skills into the project. The Corten cladding, laser cut to shape, gives the aircraft its striking form. The drilled base plates and connectors provide the strength to hold it proudly in place. And across the group, our full range of processes has been brought together: cutting, drilling, coping, tube laser and profiling.
But this monument is far from a solo project. It has been made possible through hundreds of financial donations, the tireless work of our customer Timmins Engineering & Construction and their talented team of fabricators, and the dedication of local volunteers, engineers and supply chain.
The Lancaster is more than an aircraft; it is memory given shape and sound. In Paul Warren’s words: ‘When the sun rises in the east, you can hear the rumbling of the Lancaster in the peace…’ With On Freedom’s Wings, that rumble now lives on in steel, a reminder for generations to come.
