2D or not 2D? That is the question!
Go on, admit it. You read that dramatically didn’t you? 😂
You’d be surprised how often customers ask us for a 2D mitre, when after a quick chat about what they’re actually making, it turns out they need a 3D mitre instead.
And there’s quite a difference between the two!
A 2D mitre is a cut made at an angle on one plane. Think of two lengths of box section meeting at a 45-degree angle to form a corner on a flat frame.
A 3D mitre is there things get a little more interesting...The cut needs to account for angles in more than one plane, allowing sections to meet when the joint changes direction in three dimensions.
So why does it matter?
Because asking for a 2D mitre when your design actually needs a 3D one could leave you with two pieces of steel that don’t fit together quite how you imagined.
And nobody wants to find that out when they’re trying to put the job together!
That’s why we always say it’s worth showing us what you’re trying to achieve, rather than just telling us which cut you think you need.
