Your rooflight should work with the room, not overpower it.
A useful starting point is to aim for around 15–20% of the floor area below.
Flat rooflights suit clean, contemporary spaces, with even daylight and a lower cost per m².
Roof lanterns create more of a feature, bring in light from multiple angles and add extra height and visual impact, typically at a higher cost.
Quick rule of thumb: if your extension is larger than around 3.5m x 3.5m, it’s worth considering a lantern.
