The demand for digital and technical skills in manufacturing isn’t slowing down: it’s accelerating.

As businesses continue to adopt automation, connected systems and AI-enabled processes, the expectations placed on the workforce are evolving just as quickly.
But for many employers, accessing the right talent remains a challenge.

Building these capabilities isn’t isolated training. It requires a more connected approach to workforce development.
One that brings together technical expertise, leadership capability and digital skills in a way that reflects how modern manufacturing operates.

That’s exactly what our partnership is designed to support.

By expanding access to both engineering and digital apprenticeship pathways, Make UK and JBC Skills Training Ltd are helping the industry take a more joined-up approach, developing the skills needed to improve productivity, strengthen resilience and prepare for the future.

✔ Common symptoms and how they can impact work
✔ Simple, practical ways to support colleagues
✔ The role of employers (including UK legal considerations)

It’s half term, and a well‑deserved break for our Mini Makers, who joined us at the Make UK Technology Hub earlier this month for a day of exploration and discovery.

Fresh from our own 130th birthday celebrations, we welcomed 20 bright young minds from Whoberley Hall Primary School in Coventry and asked them a big question: “What will the next 130 years of manufacturing look like?”

They didn’t hold back. From bold, imaginative ideas to thoughtful reflections on building a more sustainable and inclusive future, their creativity showed just how exciting the next generation of makers could be.

One of the most common questions employers are asking is: What does reducing the qualifying period for unfair dismissal from two years to six months actually mean in practice?

In this video, our three experts explain that this change shifts much more focus onto the early months of employment.

It puts pressure on:
⚫recruitment decisions
⚫probation periods
⚫manager check-ins
⚫feedback
⚫documentation
⚫confidence in handling difficult conversations

This is not just about contracts but about manager capability and making probation periods meaningful.

Building a skilled, future-ready workforce is a priority for every manufacturer - and apprenticeships offer a practical and proven way to achieve it.

Apprentices bring a fresh perspective, a willingness to learn, and the opportunity to build from the ground up, allowing businesses to develop their talent aligned with their needs.

With structured training and support, they develop technical knowledge and gain hands-on experience needed to contribute effectively from the very start.

For employers, the benefits of employing an apprentice are clear.

✔️Develop skills aligned to your business needs
✔️Strengthen your future talent pipeline
✔️Improve retention by investing in long-term development
✔️Support productivity with motivated, work-ready individuals

At the same time, you’re playing a crucial role in shaping the future of UK manufacturing by helping to close skill gaps and support the next generation entering the industry.

Apprenticeships aren't just an investment in people; they are an investment in the future of your business.

🍎 Are you planning to invite local schools and/ or colleges to your National Manufacturing Day 2026 event?

Now’s the time to reach out. With the May half term fast approaching and the Summer holidays not far behind, the clock is ticking to connect with teachers before schools return in September.

They need time to organise trips, permissions and transport - so the earlier you get in touch, the better your chances of securing a visit and avoiding the stress later on.

To make it easy, we’ve created ready-to-use resources including letter templates to schools. Visit the NMD website to find out more and sign up 👉 https://makeuk.info/NMD-2026-fb
