Four million members in the 1970s. Just under one million today. That's how far Britain's working men's clubs have fallen, according to Stir to Action's Centre for Democratic Business: more than three in every four members gone and the number of clubs cut from around 4,000 to roughly 1,800.

The clubs holding on are the ones where membership does something you can actually see at the bar. Member prices applied automatically with a tap of a card, spend tracked against every account so the committee spots lapsing members before the renewal letter goes out, and one credential that buys the round and unlocks the snooker room.

If your membership card doesn't change anything a non-member would notice, it isn't a benefit. It's a levy.

In just over a year, every plastic drinks bottle and can you sell will come with a 20p deposit. The Deposit Return Scheme launches on 1st October 2027 across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, covering PET, aluminium and steel containers from 150ml to 3 litres (glass isn't included). Your customers pay the deposit at the till and get it back when they return the empty. Supermarkets, convenience stores and newsagents will need to take containers back unless they're a small urban shop under 100m². Pubs, bars and clubs don't have to charge the deposit on drinks enjoyed on the premises, but they'll still pay it to their supplier, so hold on to those empties to claim it back.

Your EPOS can make the change feel effortless for your customers. Link the deposit to each in-scope product so it's added automatically and shows as its own line on the receipt; nobody's left wondering why their drink costs more. Add the new DRS barcodes to your product file as stock changes over. Set up a refund key (or voucher scanning if you're installing a reverse vending machine) so returns take seconds, not minutes. In hospitality, separate price levels for on-site and takeaway drinks mean takeaways carry the deposit and drinks at the table don't. Huge congratulations to our friends at The Harp Inn, Little Neston, on reaching the final of the Great British Pub Awards 2026! 🍻

The Harp has been shortlisted for Best Admiral Taverns Pub, and it's easy to see why. With more than 275 years of history on the edge of the Dee estuary, a rotating line-up of well-kept real ales and some of the best b**r garden views on the Wirral, it's a proper local that does everything right.

We're proud to work with the team and we'll be keeping everything crossed for them on the night. Best of luck from all of us at CCR Systems!

Next week, we will be heading to the Great British Pub Awards at Leeds Arena as finalists...and this is the team that worked so hard to get us there (well most of them!)

​Being one of just 90 pubs across the UK nominated at this huge award ceremony and just one of 6 Admiral Taverns has come as quite a surprise to be honest. We’re a small team genuinely trying to do our best as custodians of this historic pub and the amazing community that surrounds it. The judging was done back in the summer, and we hope the they loved our little corner of the world as much as everyone else does but just being considered is absolutely massive for us!

While we're known locally for our EPOS installations, our team are also skilled at installing access control systems. Take this recent project for Add People as an example.

We upgraded their office to a UniFi Access control system, built around one key principle: fail-safe. If there's a power cut or someone presses the emergency release, the doors unlock straight away so staff and visitors can get out of the building safely.
