Smart Manufacturing Ltd is proud to announce the celebration of its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of continued growth, engineering expertise, and trusted manufacturing partnerships.

Founded in 1986 by Martin Murch, the company began with humble beginnings and has since evolved into a multi million pound turnover manufacturing business, operating from Bideford, North Devon. Under Martin’s leadership as Founder and Managing Director, Smart Manufacturing Ltd has built a reputation for quality, reliability, and delivering engineered solutions across a wide range of industries.

Over the past 40 years, the business has consistently reinvested in state of the art technology and automation, expanded its facilities to support growing demand, and strengthened its end to end capabilities — from design and precision sheet metal fabrication through to CNC machining, fabrication, finishing, and assembly. Along the way, the company has also been recognised with industry awards, reflecting its commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.

We’re incredibly proud to support our local Under‑9s team this season ⚽💙.
Grassroots football plays such an important role in our community — it brings people together, gives youngsters a place to grow in confidence, learn teamwork and make memories that last a lifetime 🙌.

It’s a privilege to back the next generation and cheer them on every step of the way 🔴⚫️💪.

⚫️🔴 U9s Update 🔴⚫️

Today our U9s took part in the Bideford AFC Youth tournament- after a solid set of group games for both teams - they unfortunately ended up playing each other in the 1/4s of the cup , one side progressed and then got to the final and unfortunately lost to a very strong Bristol side - well done 👏 to the boys.

This was the 2nd week the boys wore there super new kit 😍 - they would like to say a massive THANK YOU to the amazing sponsors of this new kit

We couldn’t think of a better way to close out the month 😊

Today we’re celebrating another successful FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) on a fully bespoke system — and once again, the team absolutely delivered 💪

This project centred around a dual sanitising chamber system, designed for a major UK 🇬🇧 food manufacturer (unfortunately we can’t disclose who they are 😢), built to meet extremely high standards and solve a critical bottleneck in their production process.

The chambers are loaded with the clients products on our custom‑designed trolleys, engineered to hold the exact quantity of product, in the most efficient orientation to guarantee full coverage during sanitisation. The system transfers product seamlessly from low care to high care, ensuring total compliance and maximum efficiency.

Inside the chamber, each batch is treated with a precisely controlled chemical/water mix via a PLC‑driven programme, removing contaminants before entering the high‑care area of the facility.

A major focus of this project was not only delivering a strong ROI, but ensuring full compliance with all current Health & Safety regulations — something we take incredibly seriously.

We were pleased to welcome Sir Geoffrey Cox to our manufacturing facility recently.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to discuss some of the key challenges we currently face as an SME within the engineering and manufacturing sector.
These include ongoing skills shortages, both in experienced, skilled workers and in encouraging young people to enter the industry through apprenticeships.

We also discussed the impact of rising energy and day‑to‑day operating costs, increasing supply chain and cost pressures, and the continued rise in raw material prices, all of which place significant strain on manufacturing businesses.

In addition, we highlighted the challenges of meeting sustainability and Net Zero mandates while remaining competitive in an increasingly demanding market.

We appreciated the time taken to meet our team and understand our operations.

What a week! 💥 It’s been flat out across every department — and it’s not slowing down any time soon!

A massive thank you to our incredible team for their continued hard work, grit and tenacity 🙌💪 You’re the driving force behind everything we achieve.

🚚🚚🚚 Three lorries out on the road, delivering a wide range of precision‑manufactured parts to our amazing clients across the UK. Always great to see our work heading out to support projects nationwide!

This week also saw the handover of a particularly challenging galvanised mezzanine platform 👷‍♂️🔧. Access was tight and confined, but the site installation team absolutely smashed it — as always! 💥

Even better, this mezzanine provides access to ductwork we previously manufactured, supplied, and installed, showcasing another great example of our end‑to‑end capability and consistent quality throughout every stage of a project 🔄⭐
