At Global Infrastructure, growth has never come at the expense of culture. As the business continues to expand, there is a shared understanding across the business that people are more than numbers and titles. They are colleagues, friends and individuals with lives beyond the site gate, and that perspective shapes the way projects are delivered every day.

In this video, Alan Niven (H&S Manager), Fraser MacPherson (Pre-Construction Digital Engineer), and Kevin Williamson (Managing Director) reflect on what that culture looks like in practice. They speak about the responsibility of ensuring everyone returns home safely, the importance of retaining a close-knit feel as the company grows, and the view that strong relationships and open communication are what drive successful project delivery.

Global Infrastructure will be represented at the All-Energy Exhibition & Conference on the 13th & 14th May in Glasgow, as part of Global, which will be exhibiting for the first time as a single, collective business, showcasing an integrated offering aligned to deliver end-to-end solutions for the energy industry.

As Platinum Sponsors, Global will be exhibiting at Stand L61 across the two-day event, showcasing how connected capabilities support complex energy and infrastructure projects from concept to completion. By bringing these capabilities together, Global supports customers through a one-partner, integrated approach, helping deliver greater certainty, efficiency, and scale.

Over the last two decades, Global Infrastructure has established itself as a trusted civil engineering and construction partner to Tier 1 operators across the Scottish energy and utilities sectors. Operating across Scotland from its Highland base, the business delivers critical infrastructure solutions including substation builds and upgrades, cable laying, structural steelwork, and specialist concrete construction, supporting the continued growth of renewable energy and utilities infrastructure nationwide.

Having begun his career on site in engineering, with the ambition of moving into the commercial department as a quantity surveyor, Kevin Williamson has progressed alongside the company over the past 15 years as it has grown in scale and scope. At the start of this year, he stepped into the role of Managing Director, marking a new chapter for both himself and the business.

In this video, he reflects on what it means to lead a company he has worked his way through, focusing on putting his "own stamp on it" while building on the strong foundations already established. He also speaks about the importance of the team around him, recognising that many of those who delivered projects in the early years remain central to the business today.

Check out the video below to hear what excites Fraser MacPherson, our Pre-Construction Digital Engineer, about the future of Global Infrastructure. “What excites me most is the digital side of the business,” he says. With the role introduced last year, Fraser describes it as “a wee bit experimental and we’ve only really skimmed the surface of what it could potentially be.”

Having been with Global Infrastructure for six years, Fraser currently supports both the pre-construction and construction teams through a range of digital activities, including CAD drawings, quantity take-offs, 3D modelling, earthworks quantities, and drone surveying. As projects become more complex, this digital capability helps teams better understand what is being built and how it will be delivered.

Over the past year, Fraser has provided digital and technical support to more than 30 projects at various stages of tender and construction. Describing the role in one word, he says it is “ever changing,” reflecting how digital approaches continue to shape the future of construction.

Andrew McLaren is a freelance Site Engineer at Global Infrastructure who has worked predominantly with the business since 2017, contributing to a range of civil engineering and construction projects across Scotland, including Aberarder Windfarm Substation for Kirby, and Strategic Spares Warehouses at Dalcross and Dundee for SSEN Transmission. However, Andrew has recently been based in Nepal as a volunteer, in the 11th most earthquake-prone country in the world, where he supported the rebuild of a school in a remote community.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that when the earth shook on 25th April 2015, the lives of many Nepalis changed forever. The 7.8-magnitude earthquake, with its epicentre in Gorkha, claimed more than 9,000 lives and displaced millions. More than a decade on, homes are still being rebuilt and infrastructure continues to be restored.

The project Andrew was recently involved in was a school rebuild in a very rural part of Nepal. The scale of destruction caused by the earthquake was immense and, when combined with heavy annual monsoon rains that continue to erode the land, much of the country’s infrastructure remains in recovery. In 2015, around 30,000 classrooms across 8,304 schools were destroyed or damaged.

Andrew commented: “My motivation for travelling to Nepal on 15 December 2025 was to use my skills in a more meaningful way to support communities in need. It has certainly been a distinct shift, as the construction methods are far more basic than what we are used to back home. While I am not officially volunteering as an engineer, my background has been valuable in understanding local techniques and, at times, helping to guide other volunteers on site.”

He added: “This is my first trip to Nepal and my first time working with the charity, All Hands and Hearts. Now that the project has been handed over, I am trekking with some of the volunteers for a couple of weeks before my time in Nepal comes to an end in mid-April. It has been such a good experience, and I am certain that I will be signing up to volunteer for more of their projects in the future.”

In this video, our CEO, Iain Henderson, reflects on 20 years of delivering civil engineering and construction projects in the energy and utilities sector. Over the years, Global Infrastructure has built a proven capability that allows us to partner to tier 1 operators to deliver increasingly complex and ambitious projects.

Looking back over the years, a highlight for Global Infrastructure was supporting BAM Nuttall, principal contractor, on SSEN Transmission’s Shetland and Noss Head HVDC project, where we helped deliver the internal fit-out works. Iain describes it as “a fantastic achievement” that has given the business the confidence to tackle even bigger projects, while maintaining a “proven capability” across the full range of civil engineering and construction services.

Iain also emphasises the strength and continuity of our team: “We’ve got a team that’s been together for most of these years. That counts for a lot. We’re not a pop-up company.” With the recent appointment of 25 new staff including three new Directors – this experience, dedication, and stability are even stronger, enabling us to deliver safe, high-quality projects and support Scotland’s energy future.

In this video, Alan Niven, our Health & Safety Manager, shares the mindset that underpins every project at Global Infrastructure - “If it’s not safe, we don’t do it." For Alan, 'people first' is not just a slogan - “Nobody gets up in the morning and goes to work and doesn’t want to go home,” he says. “If you can do the smallest thing to stop that from happening… you’ve made a difference.”

With six years at Global Infrastructure, Alan is responsible for implementing our Health & Safety policy in accordance with the Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015. His role spans compliance, risk management, training and awareness, incident management, emergency preparedness, and monitoring performance across all projects.

One of Alan’s key highlights since joining Global Infrastructure was leading the business to achieve BSI ISO 45001 accreditation within just three months, during the height of the Covid pandemic. He has also supported the safe delivery of major projects with zero lost time injuries, including the Inverness and Dundee Strategic Spares Warehouses and the three-year Tummel Power Station Replant, which saw around 300,000 person-hours completed by more than 700 people.
