NYC is rewriting the future of its streets.

From Broadway to 34th Avenue, we’re seeing how walkable, people‑focused design boosts local business activity, strengthens transit, and creates healthier, more vibrant public spaces.

We spoke with Sam Frommer, Associate Principal at Buro Happold, about what’s driving this momentum and why this moment is different.

Pedestrian first streets aren’t new. But today, NYC has a stronger toolkit, clearer public support, and stronger alignment across City Hall and state partners. That combination is accelerating progress at a scale we haven’t seen before.

NYC is proving what happens when we treat streets as public space again.
Now it’s time to scale that vision equitably across the entire city.

How can cultural buildings strengthen the social and climate resilience of our cities?

In our latest article “Cultural spaces: the underestimated pillars of resilience”, we explore why museums, theatres, libraries and other cultural venues are far more than places for the arts. They are trusted civic anchors that foster identity, participation and community cohesion. Increasingly designed as accessible “third places”, they enable inclusive encounters and support societal transformation.

As climate challenges intensify, cultural buildings also serve as safe shelters, offer passive cooling, and demonstrate sustainable architectural solutions. Their visibility and public trust position them as powerful agents for change. Strengthening these cultural spaces means investing in long‑term social, ecological and cultural vitality.

Our slides provide four suggestion for what cities and planners should prioritise to unlock the full resilience potential of cultural spaces.

Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Warszawie | Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw received the Pascal 2025 Award for the most remarkable HVAC design. This is the fifth statuette that Buro Happold has received in this industry competition.

Polish Ventilation Association awarded our team “for a project that proves installations can become an element of art – providing the highest comfort for users while harmoniously and almost invisibly blending into the architectural identity of the building.” The lead HVAC designer was Paweł Lisiak, Associate Director.

Thank you for recognising our work and congratulations to all the designers of the projects featured in this year's competition!

Buro Happold together with MVRDV architects win design competition for new theatre in Veenendaal, Netherlands

We are proud to announce that MVRDV, in collaboration with Buro Happold, has been officially awarded the commission to design the new theatre building in Veenendaal in the Netherlands.

The new facility will replace the existing Lampegiet Theatre and will include a main auditorium, a multifunctional space for pop music performances and a cinema. Our design was selected as the favourite by both the public and a professional jury of theatre and construction experts during a presentation event attended by 400 local residents.

Drawing inspiration from Veenendaal’s rich textile heritage and the annual Lampegietersavond lantern festival, the concept envisions the theatre as an urban lantern – a welcoming, transparent space that connects with the municipality and its people.

We look forward to working closely with local stakeholders and experts to refine the design and bring this inspiring cultural landmark to life.

It’s official – one of the world’s most beautiful sport venues is in Munich.

Today we celebrate the news that SAP Garden, Munich’s new multifunctional arena, has been listed as one of the world’s most beautiful sports venues of 2025 by the prestigious Prix Versailles.

Announced each year at UNESCO, the coveted international architecture and design award highlights the most exceptional contemporary projects around the world, honouring those that stand out for their architecture, innovation, sustainability and beneficial integration into the living environment.

SAP Garden fulfils these criteria perfectly. Since it opened last year, the arena has become a destination Munich, providing flexible facilities that benefit not only top-level sports but also grassroots sports, schools and clubs. An innovative, custom-built seating system allows the interior to adapt to different events, guaranteeing optimal views and a unique experience for visitors. The arena also stands out for its sensitive integration into the existing landscape having been built partially underground as well as its forward-thinking sustainability concept, including a green roof with solar panels, heat recovery systems and excellent public transport links.

Buro Happold collaborated with Copenhagen-based architects 3XN on the design of the arena. Our contribution included multidisciplinary services including acoustics, building performance, MEP, façade engineering, infrastructure, structural engineering and transport and mobility.

Nominated in the category “World’s Most Beautiful Arenas 2025”, the arena joins five other exceptional new constructions in China, Japan, France and the United States. Three of them are set to receive a further distinction – the World Title at the official awards ceremony at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on 4 December.

Reducing the construction industry’s CO₂ footprint demands collective action and open collaboration is key.

Buro Happold engineers Vera Sluijter and Tijl Uijtenhaak have joined forces with MVRDV NEXT, part of MVRDV, to contribute structural engineering expertise to CarbonSpace - a free, open-source tool designed to help architects and designers reduce embodied carbon from the earliest design stages.

Unlike traditional tools, CarbonSpace provides instant feedback on the carbon impact of design choices. It’s a transparent, web-based decision-support tool that empowers users to act early, compare options, and embed carbon literacy into everyday workflows.

Congratulations to MVRDV NEXT on this impactful launch. We’re excited to see how CarbonSpace evolves and drives change across the industry.
