Some more Series spin-on oil filter kits now on Ebay. Housings came back from vapour blasting this afternoon, I'll build them up in the morning. https://ebay.us/m/AWhzPX

Currently ankle deep in filthy engine bits, trying to revive a very sick 2.25 diesel. Meanwhile the head on the other 2.25D I'm building up has failed pressure testing, blowing water out of one of the inlet ports. That's unfortunate as it was my last 2.25 head casting. Lots of 2.5 heads but they don't work on a 2.25, even worse cold starting than a Ford A series and about 30 bhp.

Anyone in Lincs or surrounding counties got a 2.25 head looking for a new home?

Engine mounts back in stock again, apologies to anyone who has been waiting for them but the order was a bit slow to be turned around this time. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/306919970731

Coming soon, more spin-on filter conversion kits for Series vehicles. Housings are waiting to be vapour blasted and all the bits to build them up are on order.

Reworked Chinese Zenith carb clones are still selling steadily. I had to fit one to a vehicle myself the other week and it worked nicely straight out of the box with minimal fiddling. The last few I have had in, the O rings they are fitting at the factory appear to be made from recycled marshmallows. No wonder people have problems with them.

A few more Series spin-on filter conversions looking for new homes. Two types, ex 2.5NA with the flat port cover and 2.5TD with the protruding oil thermostat housing. Both work equally well on the four cylinder engines but the flat type will also fit a 2.6 litre Series straight six if you change the filter for a narrower one. Available via my eBay shop.

Engine mounts are here again https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/306825016538

After saying I wouldn't be able to do any more spin on filter conversions for Series engines I found someone who had a big box of filter heads. These are currently away being vapour blasted and should be available in a week or so. I just found someone locally who does vapour blasting at a very reasonable price: if you are in north Lincs and need some castings and components cleaned up, give Jake Wilson a ring on 07432 119238. He's just done an LT95 gearbox casing for me and it came back looking like new.

The Moose has now gone to a new home :( For the regular component run to Sheffield Engine Services I bought a 26 year old Volvo V70 which turned out to need a new gearbox. I thought my days of crawling around on a concrete floor were over: never mind, the pain will subside in a couple of days. Still easier than upside down sill welding on a Disco 3 though and I rather like Volvo's way of doing things. Reasonable component access and all made of good quality Swedish steel. I only had one seized bolt to deal with.

Spent part of today preparing three repro 36IV carburettors and four spin-on oil filter housings, now listed on Ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/306786891958. The spin-on filter conversions are the last ones I will have for sale unless I pick up a job lot of engine bits from somewhere.

I found a box of odd freewheel hub bits and pieces, couple of single orphan hubs and some parts for Fairey hubs although not enough to make a pair. These will be going up on Ebay in the next couple of days.

I've done a piece for Land Rover Monthly on Ashcroft high ratio transfer boxes for Series vehicles which I think will be in the next issue. The gearbox on my Series III needs to come out at some point as I suspect all the synchromesh springs are now sitting in the bottom of the casing: at that point I'll probably replace the overdrive with an Ashcroft conversion as the vehicle doesn't do a lot of heavy towing these days. That will give me two Fairey overdrives to rebuild and sell: I feel another LRM article coming on...

MoT on the Moose (Disco 3) runs out this week. It has holes in the sills and I haven't dared press the handbrake switch since I bought it in August. I'll see if I can get another MoT on it, either way I will be looking to move it on soon as it has done the job I needed it to do. I'll miss the old beast.

Happy New Year everyone, hope some of you are enjoying the snow in your Land Rovers. I have ventured out a couple of times in the Moose but the roads around here are all sheet ice so the Series III has stayed at home: in these conditions I'd rather have something with ABS, and if another driver loses control and hits me it's going to be a lot less painful in every way if I'm in a sub £1k Disco 3.

Back to work, and first thing this morning another two boxes of engine mounts dropped on my doorstep at breakfast time, now in the Ebay shop along with some more repro 36IV carburettors and overhaul kits. I just had the latest LRM come through the door and they've given my carbs a mention which was nice of them. Ebay shop here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/glencoyneengineeringltd

Currently in the workshop, a Series III gearbox being rebuilt with an Ashcroft high ratio transfer box. I have a few spare core boxes for overhaul, so if you need a Series box for your project and don't have a rebuildable one, get in touch and I'll see if I can help.

Finally, can someone explain to me like I'm a five year old, why a well known aftermarket parts supplier has started selling freewheeling front hubs for Defender and Disco 1? A few very early 110s had selectable four wheel drive, but I'm kind of struggling to see why you would want them on a vehicle with permanent 4wd and a centre diff. Maybe I'm missing something here, but I'm not sure that putting the entire drivetrain load through the dog teeth on the centre diff lock is going to end well.

I had almost forgotten what sunshine looked like. Out and about this morning in my Series III, picking up a gearbox for overhaul and a few other bits from my storage unit. Merry Christmas to my customers past and present and to Land Rover owners and enthusiasts everywhere.

A busy day hiding from the wind and rain in my snug little workshop. I started off by reworking a Discovery 200TDi flywheel housing for a Series conversion. I couldn't tell you how many I have done over the years - maybe a couple of hundred? My counterbore tool is getting blunt again and this is the second one I've worn out.

Doing the flywheel housing reminded me that I needed to finish off the latest technical page for the website: Backplates and Bellhousings https://www.glencoyne.co.uk/land-rover-backplate which gives some useful information on marrying up various Land Rover engines and gearboxes of different designs and eras. Christmas is coming, so feel free to buy me a virtual coffee and encourage me to keep writing: Ko-fi link at bottom of the web page.

I was still working on the new page when a truck turned up outside to drop off the first major job for my new workshop - full stripdown and overhaul on a 2.25 petrol engine out of a Series III. This is a vehicle I looked after when I was at Banham: it has been a bit down on power for a while and recently started to get very smoky so overdue for a refresh.

I spent the afternoon pulling the engine to bits: lots of thick oily carbon deposits in the combustion chambers and on top of the pistons, and one spark plug much oilier than the others. I thought the oil burning was just down to worn, glazed bores and rock-hard valve stem oil seals. But when I cleaned the top of one of the pistons to see if there were any size markings on it I found a crack right through the crown extending the entire width of the piston. Not something I've seen before on a two and a quarter petrol, normally it is only 19J turbodiesels that do this. Another piston was cracked although "only" half way across: the others were fine.

Original standard pistons with factory grading stamps so I suppose they haven't done too badly to last 43 years in a hard-worked and much off-roaded 109 station wagon. Bearing shells were also original and very clean and unworn. In fact all the internals apart from the pistons were pretty good, and no sludge buildup in the sump. This is a vehicle which has been in the same ownership for a long time and always had regular oil and filter changes, and it shows. Here endeth the lesson.

Shop news:

1. Another two boxes of engine mounts just arrived. The price has gone up slightly for the first time in several years, but I've changed the shipping to RM Tracked 48 and reduced the time to ship by a day so the price and delivery time for customers should be the same. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/306642117396

2. I've listed a variety of engine and gearbox mounting brackets, some lift pump spacer kits that I found in the bottom of a box and a few other useful bits and pieces. I still have three 200TDi flywheel housings on outright sale, no exchange needed. More to follow as I gradually work through the 100 or so boxes that I have stored in various places.

3. I'm now sold out of spin-on oil filter conversions for Series vehicles BUT I can do a few more if I can get hold of some oil thermostat covers, part number ETC4022 as pictured below. If anyone has one or more of these sitting around doing nothing, new or second hand, message me and I can turn them into money for you 🙂.
