Need a better camera for an event video call or livestream? Your phone may be able to help.

On a compatible Mac, iPhone XR or later running iOS 16 or newer can work as a we**am through Continuity Camera. Mount it securely, then select your iPhone in the video app. On supported Android devices, connect by USB and choose “Webcam” in the USB settings before selecting it in your call or streaming app.

Having trouble hearing a talk, panel or booth conversation in a noisy venue? Your phone may be able to help.

On iPhone, pair AirPods, Beats or Made-for-iPhone hearing aids, then go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices > Live Listen. Place your iPhone near the speaker or sound source : on a table or pointed towards the stage : and hear the sound amplified in your earphones. Add Hearing to Control Centre for quicker access.

On Android, try Google’s Sound Amplifier via Settings > Accessibility > Sound Amplifier. It can amplify ambient sound and filter background noise using wired or Bluetooth earphones. Menu names and availability vary by device and Android version, so check before your event.

Test it at home, take a charging plan, position your phone close to the person or PA, and keep earphone volume at a safe level. Many phones open the result in your browser or show it in a notification. Some scanner apps may keep recent scans, but a persistent scan history is not available on every phone and can vary by device, browser and app.

The safest option is to bookmark the page or save it to your reading list as soon as it opens. That way, you can find it again without rescanning.

Taking a photo of a stage, stand or display? Turn on your phone’s camera grid and horizon indicator first.

On iPhone, open Settings > Camera, then switch on Grid and Level. In the Camera app, use the lines to keep the stage or display edges straight.

On Android, open the Camera app’s settings and look for Grid lines, Level, Horizon or Composition guide. The name and availability can vary by manufacturer and Android version.

Heading to a long event day? Check your phone’s battery condition before you leave: not just the current percentage.

On iPhone: open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Check Maximum Capacity and look for any service or performance warnings.

On Android: open Settings and search for “Battery health” or “Battery diagnostics”. The menu varies by manufacturer and Android version. On Samsung devices, you can also check Samsung Members > Support > Phone diagnostics > Battery status.

Lost your bearings at a large outdoor event? Your phone’s built-in compass can help you get oriented.

On iPhone, open the Compass app and hold your phone flat. Follow any calibration prompt. On Android, open the pre-installed Compass app if your device has one; some Android phones do not include one.

If the reading seems wrong, gently move your phone in a figure-of-eight motion, then step away from speakers, power banks, vehicles, metal barriers and other magnetic interference. Keep the phone flat and allow the direction to settle.

Use the compass to find north and work out which direction to face towards an entrance or meeting point using the venue map. It is an orientation aid, not a replacement for the event map, proper navigation tools or managed connectivity.
