NFRC TB36 in plain English: what it means for your laps

You’ve probably been asked:
“Is your sealant compliant with NFRC TB36?”
But what does that actually mean for you on site?

NFRC Technical Bulletin 36 sets the performance standards for butyl strip sealants in metal buildings. It classifies products into:
• Class A – high performance
• Class B – minimum performance

The testing covers adhesion, creep, water resistance, compression and long term durability. For metal roofing and cladding, Class A is widely treated as the standard to aim for, especially where airtightness, weathertightness and long service life are required.

Why it matters to contractors:
• Easier sign off with main contractors and consultants
• Fewer disputes over “fit for purpose” if there’s a problem later
• You can point to an objective standard, not just “we’ve always used this”

Strip sealant vs cartridge: when “quicker” costs you more

On a busy job, cartridge sealant can look like the faster option.
Cut the nozzle, run a bead, move on.

But for metal sheeting and cladding, there’s a reason industry guidance focuses on strip sealants at laps, end joints and penetrations.

Strip sealants are designed to:
• Stay flexible as the building moves
• Resist weathering and ozone over the long term
• Provide consistent compression across the lap
• Deliver reliable airtightness and weathertightness

Cartridge sealant is easy to apply – but harder to control:
• Uneven bead thickness
• Gaps at stop/starts
• Over or under compression at fixings
• Long term shrinkage or cracking

For sheeting and cladding contractors, the real question should never be “Which product will make the job faster today?”, it should be “Which one will keep me off the roof in 3–5 years’ time?”

Use strip sealants as your default at end laps, side laps and critical joints. Reach for cartridge only where the detail genuinely demands it – not just for speed.
