Whoever gets closest to the location will get some goodies that I can rustle together.

I’ve misplaced 5 sockets very similar to this one.

But in my infinite wisdom I have put them somewhere “SAFE”

My little ADHD addled brain has decided to forget this safe location, meaning I can’t start the job I have to.

Jobs for the week are done and back with their respective owners. A great busy week been had!

Which now means that I can get a little time to look at one of my own jobs. Trying to get a fairing and headlight bracket made for the Z. Fed up of being Cinderella 😂

Time to use one of the best tools you can possess in your arsenal as a sheet metal worker.

A height gauge!!!!

In the 25 years of my working life I have only ever seen one being used at Bentley where I served my time. A big part of my training was in utilising this simple tool to return repeated accuracy time and time again. Nowhere else I have worked has had one, which I never understood. I would imagine it’s down to people using laser cutters for the vast majority of work. OK if you have one or don’t need the job quick. But in our little shop, this thing comes into its own very quickly.

But when opening the workshop it was high up on the list of things we NEEDED. Managed to get this lovely little Mitutoyo one at a bargain price, it’s earned its living multiple times over.

No messing about with a tape and square. Back markers as good as they are, aren’t as accurate. But a height gauge makes the job quick and accurate. Even down to decimal places!

Our neighbours at Black Dog Engineering having never used one before, was shown how to use it and then went out and bought their own.

So brew in hand, measurements taken, pattern drawn out, true lengths taken from the pattern (really important bit this!) let’s get this marked out, cut and bent and see how it fits!!!!

Hopefully that will have got your attention. If you’ve got a leaking tank and someone advises you to put a liner in. If they’re your friend, disown them. If it’s not someone you know, that’s probably for the best, as they may well eat their own faeces and think that Kier Starmer was a great PM.

Why such a hard line approach to this? Because it really screws things up for it to then be repaired correctly.

And

IT WILL FAIL! They all do! So not only do you have the original problem back, it’s now harder to solve and you get the Brucey bonus of it stuffing a load of white crap down your carbs or injectors, resulting in running issues. Plus it will cost more to put right. 😂 (as well as the wasted money in the liner it self)

I appreciate the main reason people go down that route is cost, of both the repair then the repaint. But like with most things in life, you buy cheap and it will bite you in the ass (apart from Aldi Spanners, really good!)

What should have been a really straight forward repair of three little pinholes, ended up being 4 hours of swearing at it every time it blew back. Due to the liner TIG was out the equation to start with, so hit it with the MIG set then capped it off with some TIG braising.

Left with acetone in over night, no leak. Then I always check with unleaded (as that stuff will find its way out no matter what!)

Damage to paint kept to an absolute minimum, as overall it’s in very good condition. It will be getting a full respray I believe in the new year after it’s been on display at Stafford classic.

Over the years I must have made several thousand metres of hand railing, but I never get bored of it. Always a job that I enjoy.

We fabbed the steps a couple of weeks ago and then got them back in to finish the hand railing.

Clean, fresh and simple. 💪

Managed to find the lost posts, but only way is to repost them. So here we go!

A little something we did for a friend of ACE last week.

This old boot stand has had a hard life, an upright had cracked and fell off and another was missing all together.

Normally we would have TIG brazed this, but a friend put us onto using 309 wire. Our first time using it and to say we were impressed by how it worked is an understatement.

We located the one that was broken off easy enough, then made up another upright matching it in to the original as best we could using a piece of steel cut to shape.

One very happy friend as a result.

25 years ago today I was sat in an office in the Engineering department at Rolls Royce and Bentley motor cars. The first day of my apprenticeship. At the most prestigious automotive manufacturer the world has ever seen! What a day! What an achievement! Little did I know how that day would pan out.

Usual boring stuff was being done, health and safety, brew procedures etc. Normal first day stuff.

That was until we were told that we were on amber alert as some planes had been hijacked , with the nature of what they did and the other business that shared the site that did military stuff, we had to be ready to go at the drop of a hat.

No one ever could have guessed what would happen. We certainly couldn’t have. What followed was a truly horrific case of terrorism that shook the world and changed the landscape of NYC forever.

Every year it comes around and makes me remember back to the tragedy and also the start of a 25 year career within an industry that’s the biggest part of my life. It gives me very mixed feelings, a milestone that should be celebrated for what I’ve achieved. Yet I feel disrespectful if we don’t fully appreciate the events of that day.

I went to NYC many years after, not knowing really was in the city. Looking up at all the amazing sights, all of a sudden there was a big gap. My eyes came down to ground level, where I realised where I was. That really hammered it home for me. Just nothing but a big gap and a building site where they were still sorting through the aftermath of it.

9/11 a day that shook the world to its core. My deepest and truly felt condolences to all who lost their lives, the families who lost loved ones, the service men who gave up their lives valiantly saving others without a seconds thought.

That extends to our tools and there’s non better than The mighty kinetic_customs we’ve got several pieces of theirs, from hammers to centre punches.

This spirit level is that damn sexy that it only gets brought out for nice jobs (never goes on site either) just look at that beautiful piece of billet CNC aluminium.

No problems I say, done loads of stubborn ones……………well. Today was not my day. With the top of the cap being mullered, with no way of getting a purchase on anything I welded the preload adjuster to the cap at about 180 amps, nice n hot, the heat will help. This baby is gonna spin out and I will say”woohoo”

Literally hanging off it and it just laughed at me.

Nearly gave myself a mischief trying. Someone sent that baby in full UGGA with several loads of DUGGAS just to be sure.

Could we have potentially got it apart? More than likely, but the time and cost it could have gotten to, would be more than a second hand leg would cost. And that’s even if the parts were salvageable after (the cap was already dead, fork leg most likely too)

When asked what the charge was, I replied “nothing, I’ve not won so you shouldn’t be out of pocket for that” which got a “are you sure?” as a reply.

We’re not here to rip people off, we look after our customers as best as we can, as I would expect others to act.
