It was great to be invited back to one of our projects and to have a de-brief over a hot cup of coffee (definitely needed on this cold day). Hopefully you can agree that this is a stunning design and it was a real pleasure to have been involved.

Not only are we lucky enough to be involved in some remarkable residential schemes but we also provide essential support to the water industry. Our latest client came to us with the unique problem of replacing a failed cap to a 12m diameter digester tank. Our client needed a solution built from the ground up and we proposed an innovative solution to overcome the many geometrical constraints on site.

The final design included a bespoke steel framework with a central truss connection assembly, all demountable and tailor made to fit the existing tank. Whilst working with wastewater isn’t glamourous it just goes to show that we are not afraid to get our hands dirty from time to time.

On a dreary Monday morning do you ever wish that you could rewind time back to when the sun was shining? This time last month we were on a moat carrying out bridge inspections in glorious sunshine.

We have recently been carrying out a number of projects for our clients in the industrial sector. This recent project required the design of a lifting frame that had to be retrospectively installed in a confined space. Using our 3D analysis software we were able to model the existing infrastructure to ensure that the framework would fit. We also provided a sequenced lifting plan showing that the plant to be removed could be lifted and rotated in the tight space available, thus giving our client confidence that the operation could be carried out without any issues.

With the weather seemingly on the turn, we are looking forward to getting out to some of our more recent projects that have now been completed. High up on that list is a collection of five detached, bespoke dwellings at Great Bossingham Farm. Looking forward to seeing how the finished buildings compare with the initial CGI

We often get asked by clients to design corner bi-fold openings without the use of a corner post. Now this arrangement often requires quite an intricate structural design to ensure that the structure over the doors is adequately supported without impacting on the operation of the doors. The structure is therefore quite involved however the final finish is effortless.

We won’t post the photos of the steel framework for this project as we like to keep our trade secrets to ourselves.

So, a few months back we posted some images of a steel frame designed by us for a regular client. Whilst we found the design of the intricate framework rather engaging, we appreciate that this may not have been the case for everyone. However, we are pleased to update this post with some images of the final build, and we can assure you that the final product demonstrates the beauty that can be achieved through excellent design.

Guy Hollaway Architects threw everything at us for this project, with reducing roof pitches, vaulted rooflines, cantilevered eaves, open glazed corners, in step glazing and to top it off, a floating office with glass walkways. It was a pleasure to work with the design team throughout and hopefully you can agree that the end finish validates the hard work put in.

Believe it or not, this was once a bungalow. Now beautifully extended with vaulted rooflines and open plan living. It was a pleasure to be part of the transformation.

So, it’s time for us to get something off our chests. Its time for us to own up and be honest. Its time for us to fess up to something which we are sure you already know……………we are terrible at social media.

We have been considering why this is the case. Perhaps it is because of our collective age. Social media doesn’t come naturally to any of us, and we are still trying to understand the value that social media can bring to our business.

Perhaps another factor is that we are ‘head down’ Engineers. We are busy working for great clients on great projects, knee deep in calculations, drawings and structural models. Finding time to put that all aside and post a meaningful social media update always seems to play second fiddle.

But perhaps more so than the above, structural engineering isn’t always glamourous. We are the front end of the project. People don’t want to see a photo of a steel beam sat on a padstone. Whilst an intricate steel frame may excite us, we understand that to others this is just more steelwork, a necessary yet ordinary part of the modern building. And because we are front end, we rarely get to see the final build with all the finishes and flourishes that would make a great social media update.

So, moving forward we are going to try to do better. We will try to post more regularly and showcase the work we do, whether this is a small extension or an award-winning project. So please follow us, like us, share us and all those other things and we will endeavour to keep you updated of our latest projects.
