SS Richard Montgomery is a World War II-era American Liberty ship that sank in the Thames Estuary off the coast of the Isle of Sheppey in 1944.
The wreck is famous and dangerous because it still holds around 1,400 tonnes of explosives in its cargo holds, it lies partially submerged near Sheerness, where its masts were still visible more than 80 years later
On the 30th September 2026, the third and final mast was removed from the wreck and transported to Chatham Dockyard, where it will be preserved and conserved as an important historical artefact.
Using one of our GMK3060L mobile cranes, we carefully lifted the masts from the transport and safely positioned them within the Dockyard, ready for the conservation work to begin.
It was a privilege to play a part in preserving a unique piece of maritime and wartime history
