They identify the manufacturer, and in many cases, the strength grade of the fastener.

A quick look can tell you what you need to replace.

✅️ Metric = 8.8, 10.9, 12.9

✅️ Whitworth and BSF = R

What does Nyloc actually mean??

A Nyloc nut contains a nylon insert that grips the bolt thread, helping prevent loosening caused by vibration.

The nylon insert is designed for repeated reliability - but should not usually be reused in critical applicatons.

UNC and Whitworth: Same TPI... almost!

UNC and Whitworth can appear very similar because many sizes have the same threads per inch (TPI)

The famous exception

💠UNC = 13 tpi
💠Whitworth = 12 tpi

So UNC can be used instead of hard to find Whitworth bolts (luckily we stock a large range of both 😉)

What does 8.8 mean on a bolt head

The markings on a metric bolt head show its strength grade - not its size.

For example:

M10 x 50mm 8.8 bolt

M10 = diameter
50mm = length
8.8 = strength class

A grade 8.8 bolt has a tensile strength of approximately 800 MPa.

We also stock higher tensile bolts in 10.9 and 12.9

A nut does not need to be as strong as the bolt!

In many applications, the nut is intentionally designed to be slightly softer than the bolt. This helps prevent damage to the bolt threads and allows the nut to deform slightly for a secure joint.

A2 and A4 stainless steel resists corrosion because they form a thin passive oxide on the surface.

A4 stainless is often chosen for harsher environments because it contains molybdenum, improving resistance to corrosion, especially from salt water.
