A special visit that brought our international teams together!

We were delighted to welcome our colleagues from Carter Americas to the UK for a visit to both Carter Manufacturing and UNASIS.

It was a fantastic opportunity to strengthen relationships, exchange knowledge and showcase the engineering expertise, manufacturing capabilities and specialist solutions behind our businesses.
From precision bearings and engineered solutions to aerospace bearing tooling, bringing our teams together allowed us to explore new opportunities and discuss how we can collaborate even more closely to support customers across the UK, Europe and the Americas.

Great partnerships are built through shared expertise, open conversations and time spent together—and this visit delivered all three.

Steve Hawkins-Flavell will be representing Carter Bearings at Wales’s flagship defence, security and national resilience supply chain event on 3–4 September at the International Convention Centre Wales in Newport.

Precision engineered for the coldest environments.
Manufactured by UNASIS, our cryogenic bearings are designed to operate reliably from liquid helium temperatures of -269°C through to ambient conditions.
At these extreme temperatures, standard bearing materials can become brittle, conventional lubricants may freeze, and thermal contraction can compromise bearing geometry. UNASIS addresses these challenges through:

🔹 Proprietary cryogenic heat treatment
🔹 Specialised ring, rolling-element and cage materials
🔹 Advanced dry-lubrication systems
🔹 Designs that accommodate thermal contraction
🔹 Liquid-nitrogen testing at -196°C before delivery

With NASA and ESA space heritage, these bearings support demanding applications including rocket-engine turbopumps, satellite cryocoolers, hydrogen fuel systems, LNG equipment and scientific research instruments.
Standard configurations may be available from stock, while custom bearings can be engineered for specific temperature, speed, load and environmental requirements.

Selecting the right aerospace bearing is only part of the process. Correct installation is equally important.

Our final Farnborough highlight is the specialist aerospace bearing tooling designed and manufactured in the UK by our sister company, UNASIS.

The range includes:
• Tri-roller, flat-roller and U-roller swaging tools
• Cutting and removal tools
• Proof-load testing equipment
• Breakaway and swivel torque test tools
• Installation and extraction tools
• Staking and housing-swaging tools
• Aerospace bearing heaters
• Custom tooling and complete tool kits

These tools are engineered to help achieve controlled, repeatable bearing installation and verification while reducing the risk of component damage.

Conventional bearing solutions are not designed for temperatures approaching absolute zero.

That is why cryogenic bearings were a key part of our Farnborough showcase.

Applications involving liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen, liquefied natural gas and other cryogenic media present several engineering challenges:
• Conventional lubricants may freeze or become ineffective
• Materials contract at different rates
• Internal clearances can change significantly
• Seals and cages must remain stable
• Contamination can have serious consequences

Carter works with customers to specify bearing materials, internal geometry, cages, coatings and lubrication strategies suited to these extreme conditions.

Steve Hawkins-Flavell, Business Development Manager at Carter Manufacturing, is heading to Harwich on 11 August to attend the East of England Regional Defence and Security Cluster (ERDSC) engagement event with the Royal Navy.

Steve will join a tour of a Royal Navy Patrol Vessel before attending a presentation on the future Hybrid Navy and hearing from fellow ERDSC members.

He is looking forward to engaging with the Royal Navy, strengthening connections across the defence supply chain and learning more about its future requirements.
