A mountainous, verdant island with long sandy beaches and turquoise waters that quickly turn dark, hinting at great depths.
Hawaii?
Not quite.
A completely different American island: Attu.
This island is the westernmost part of the United States, part of the state of Alaska, at the very end of the Aleutian chain.
The Aleuts were the island’s indigenous inhabitants before the Second World War.
After the war, the surviving inhabitants were moved to other islands or to the mainland, as there were no longer enough of them to maintain a viable community in their former village.
The government decided to build a LORAN station (Long Range Navigation, a radio navigation system) at the southern tip of the island.
Twenty soldiers were stationed there on a permanent basis.
On 1 August 2010, the LORAN station ceased operations and, on 27 August, it was decommissioned, leading to the departure of the personnel and the end of any resident population on the island.

Yuncheng Salt Lake, formerly known as Salt Marsh or Gu, and also known as Xie Lake or Hedong Salt Lake, stretches approximately 20 to 35 kilometres from east to west and 3 to 5 kilometres from north to south, forming a depression.
It covers a total area of 130 square kilometres; the lake surface lies at an altitude of 320 metres, with a water depth of 0.22 metres. It is a natural inland salt lake and the largest lake in Shanxi Province.
In addition to salt, it contains magnesium sulphate, calcium sulphate, potassium, bromine, boron and other rare elements, making it a natural ‘Lake of a Thousand Treasures’.

This solar power plant in Rajasthan is one of the largest in the world, with a capacity of 2,250 megawatts – the equivalent of two medium-sized nuclear power stations.
Here is the development of this facility over five years, from 2016 to 2020. Since 2020, expansion has been very limited.
You will note that this industrial development has been accompanied by significant agricultural growth; an entire region has been transformed.

Each dot on the sea represents an oil tanker approaching or departing from Bandar Abbas, on Iran’s southern coast.
Since 28 February 2026, the Strait of Hormuz has been experiencing significant geopolitical and economic disruption.
This has led to a sharp decline in maritime traffic: the number of oil tankers passing through initially fell by around 70%, whilst more than 150 vessels anchored outside the strait to avoid the risks.
Shortly afterwards, traffic dropped to virtually zero. This disruption affected around 20% of the world’s daily oil supply.
The closure of the Strait has been described as the most significant disruption to energy supplies since the energy crisis of the 1970s.

Forty years ago.
26 April 1986 marked a turning point in the nuclear energy industry.
Reactor No. 4 at the Chernobyl power station, on the banks of the River Prypiat, exploded, just 100 km north of Kyiv.
Hundreds of thousands of people were deployed to decontaminate the radioactive areas and to manage and limit the consequences of the explosion.
A first sarcophagus was built in 1986 to isolate the reactor and thus limit the release of radioactivity into the environment.
In 2012, construction of the second sarcophagus began and was completed in 2019.
The River Prypiat flows into the Dnieper, which helps to make Belarus and Ukraine vast, remarkably fertile agricultural lands.
The infrared image reveals the numerous meanders, both active and dead, characteristic of slow-flowing watercourses, which deposit rich sediments.

The Banc d’Arguin is a group of sandbanks at the mouth of the Arcachon basin, approximately 65 km west of Bordeaux, in France.
Its shape is constantly changing in response to the winds and sea currents.
Its archipelagos are home to flora typical of south-western coastal habitats, including protected plant and animal species.
The Banc is indeed a nesting site for birds such as the sandwich tern and the oystercatcher.
The Reserve is also an important site for many wintering and migratory species.
Classified as a nature reserve since 1972, it is subject to strict regulations.
During the summer of 2022, a major forest fire destroyed a vast area of pine trees to the east and south of the Dune du Pilat, opposite the Banc d'Arguin.
Not to be confused with the Banc d’Arguin off the coast of Mauritania, known for being the scene of the sinking of the French frigate La Méduse in 1816 and depicted by Gericault in ‘The Raft of the Medusa’.
A few years after this tragic event, the engineer Paul Monnier marked Arguin on a nautical chart of the Arcachon Basin for the first time.
Perhaps he had been struck by the danger of the channels, notorious for shipwrecks, or by the landscape’s similarities to the Mauritanian coastline?

Piton de la Fournaise, natural growth of Réunion island.
The eruption, which began on 13 February 2026, came to an end on 25 March 2026.
No possibilities are being ruled out regarding how the situation may develop (a definitive end, or a resumption of activity at the same site or at a different site).
Similar episodes have already been observed, with sudden resumptions of eruptive activity following a period of cessation, notably during the eruption of August–October 2015.
Here is a series of before-and-after photos showing the new lava flow. The NIR (Near-Infrared) images clearly reveal this dark trail amidst the vegetation shown in red.
Degassing continues and lava flows may remain visible, due to the gradual emptying of the lava tunnels.
The plume at the point where it enters the sea and the fumaroles may persist for several days to several weeks.

With the Suez Canal, trade between Europe and the Persian Gulf and all of Asia is shortened by 5,000 nautical miles, or 10 days of sailing.
Ferdinand de Lesseps' Universal Suez Canal Company built the canal between 1859 and 1869.
When construction was completed, Egypt owned 44% of the canal's value and 21,000 French citizens owned 56%.
In 1875, Egypt's foreign debt forced it to sell its shares to the United Kingdom, which wanted to regain its influence on the route to India.
On 26 July 1956, Nasser, President of the Republic of Egypt, took over the canal.
The United Kingdom, France and Israel launched a military operation. This action was justified by the restitution to the shareholders who had financed and contributed to the prosperity of the canal of what, according to international law and past agreements, belonged to them.
The Suez operation lasted a week.
However, the United Nations sided with Egypt and drafted a resolution condemning the Franco-Israeli-British expedition.
The Suez Canal brought in around €9 billion for the Egyptian state in 2023, continuing to break records with the ‘highest’ turnover in history.

The Atacama Desert in Chile and Peru is home to lithium mines that have become veritable gold mines with the development of batteries for electric vehicles.
These are highly visible from space in the crystal-clear sky.
A sky whose clarity is highly coveted by astronomers. It is in these same regions that the world's most powerful telescopes are located.
This proximity between industry and science is not always easy to manage.
On the one hand, there are significant economic interests, with dust emissions and constant light pollution;
on the other, there are extremely sensitive instruments that find themselves in conditions that interfere with observations.

With continuous rainfall throughout the month, February 2026 is already the rainiest February since 1959 in France on average across the country, with more than twice the monthly normal.
The rainfall is falling on water-saturated soil, limiting infiltration and causing significant flooding across much of the country.
Significant to major floods are still affecting the west of the country, threatening people and property.
These images of the Garonne River in south-west Bordeaux clearly illustrate the concepts of ‘primary channel’ and ‘secondary channel’ of rivers and streams.
