BREAKING NEWS
We'll soon come back on the travel "Latitude zero" but this event must be shared now.
In early August 2026, an ice island as large as Manhattan broke away from the Petermann Glacier.
This break-off is described in a press release issued by the University of Ottawa, following several years of anticipation.
Glaciologists had been monitoring the progression of the fractures on this floating ice shelf from space.
This broken-off piece covers 76.4 square kilometres and is up to 150 metres thick in places.
The team anticipates two further sections, measuring approximately 94 and 84 square kilometres respectively.
With this first piece, the total area lost would amount to 254 square kilometres, or around 22 per cent of the total.
Such ice masses are unusual in the Arctic, unlike in the Antarctic seas.
No equivalent loss of floating ice had affected the Petermann Glacier since 2012.
An ice mass of this size can retain its cohesion for several years. Its flat profile explains why it is referred to as an ‘ice island’ rather than a conventional iceberg.

Latitude zero, road to the west, n°1.
The name ‘Libreville’ was first given to the village founded in 1849 to accommodate slaves freed from a Brazilian slave ship that had been boarded off the coast, at a time when the slave trade – formally banned since 1848 – was still continuing in the Gulf of Guinea.
The freed slaves were taken aboard and thus reached Gabon.
From then on, Libreville served as the starting point for the French colonisation of Gabon towards the end of the 19th century.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Libreville became the capital of French Congo, before losing this status to Brazzaville in 1904.
It was from Libreville that many freedom fighters set out, joining Force L – which would later become the 2nd Armoured Division under the future French Marshal Leclerc – and made their way to Chad.
The column crossed North Africa to liberate occupied France in 1944.

Whilst the news is showing us images of Western Europe parched, scorched and baked by nearly 10 weeks
of abnormal heat and a lack of rain, we’ve decided to bring you a bit of cool relief.
This mosaic shows southern Greenland in summer.
Can you see those white dots near the coast?
They are icebergs – literally ‘mountains of ice’.
The close-ups of the east and west coasts clearly show these icebergs breaking away from the glaciers.
On the west coast, you can just make out an airport runway and the small town of Ilulissat.

S2GM creates composite images from several photographs by selecting the best pixels.
You can also set the resolution of these pixels: 10m x 10m, 20m x 20m or 60m x 60m.
And sometimes, even at the highest possible resolution, the image still looks pixelated!
No, this isn’t a mistake – these are fields in the south-west of San Francisco.
Half-mile squares that contrast with a desert landscape characterised by curves.
This geometry and the contrast create the illusion of pixelation.

On the other side of the world from the JRC’s offices in Brussels … lies the Pacific Ocean.
The rockiest land is Chatham Island (in New Zealand Māori: Wharekauri; in Moriori: Rekohu), a New Zealand island situated some 800 kilometres east of the South Island, in the South Pacific Ocean.
It forms part of the Chatham Islands archipelago, of which it is the largest and most populous island.
European contact began in 1791, with a proposed sale to Germany in 1841 which ultimately fell through, leading to the islands’ incorporation into New Zealand in 1842.
Today, the islands have a population of 620, with Waitangi as the main settlement, and their economy is based on conservation, tourism, agriculture and fishing.
The Chatham Islands have their own time zone, 45 minutes ahead of mainland New Zealand.

The midnight sun : last days in Europe !
This phenomenon occurs around the summer solstice (June in the northern hemisphere, December in the southern hemisphere)
at high latitudes beyond the Arctic and Antarctic polar circles.
The number of 24-hour days of daylight during which this phenomenon occurs increases with latitude.
It reaches its minimum (one day) at the Arctic Circle, at 66° 34', and its maximum (six months) at the Pole (90°).
Due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis relative to the plane of its orbit, not all regions of the Earth are illuminated in the same way by the Sun during its annual revolution. Between the March and September equinoxes, in the northern hemisphere, the Sun shines continuously on the North Pole.
The same phenomenon occurs at the South Pole between the September and March equinoxes.
At the North Cape between 14 May and 29 July.

Anyone familiar with European capitals will have recognised Paris and the River Seine running through the city.
50 km to the south, the Forest of Fontainebleau is ablaze.
It is a significant fire – over 2,000 hectares have been burnt – but it is not a major fire either.
However, what is very unusual is that we are not in a Mediterranean forest or one in southern Europe.
Fontainebleau is at the same latitude as Stuttgart, further north than Vienna!
This is what makes this fire remarkable, and unfortunately it may not be an isolated incident in the future...

Western Europe, and France in particular, is experiencing a drought accompanied by a succession of heatwaves,
exacerbated by a heat dome and further aggravated by a dry, scorching wind.
The impact on wildlife, flora, forests, agriculture and water supplies remains unknown at this stage, given the unprecedented nature of this situation.

The white desert of the Lençóis Maranhenses.
In this desert, which stretches along 70 kilometres of coastline, up to 1,600 millimetres of rainfall actually falls each year – more than in the Hautes Fagnes or in Scotland.
Consequently, for five months of the year following the rainy season, the water table rises, creating freshwater lagoons in the hollows of the dunes.
This constellation of turquoise, emerald and aquamarine lakes – a natural phenomenon unique in the world – appears from June to November, then evaporates in the intense heat, slowly fading away like a mirage until the following year.
And this has been happening for over ten thousand years – ever since this desert was formed from the alluvial deposits of the Parnaíba River, transformed by time and the alchemy of the elements.

In Mali, between Djenné, Mopti and Timbuktu, lies a vast floodplain: the inland delta of the River Niger.
One million people live in this area of approximately 35,000 km².
Fishermen, herders and farmers take turns utilising the water and land to consume and export the Delta’s resources.
A sophisticated social organisation ensures the movement of people back and forth depending on the flood level.
But whilst the environment changes cyclically throughout the year, it also shifts along two more linear axes, which are closely linked:
that of the degradation of the natural environment due to climatic hazards and human activity,
and that of local, regional and global socio-economic changes.
Changes with multiple effects on the balance between humans and nature, changes to which humans must adapt but which they must also limit and manage.
