KTWO K7546 Compact Splitting Machine.
Changing the blade on our splitting machine. This video is sped up x10. For us, changing the blade itself takes around 10 minutes, followed by another 5–10 minutes to adjust and sharpen it properly before the machine is ready for splitting again. So realistically, allow around 15–20 minutes for the whole process.
One of the questions we get asked a lot is:
“How often do you need to change the blade?”
The answer is… it really depends.
A few things can affect how quickly the blade wears:
• How often you use the machine
• How much grinding pressure you use
• The types of leather you usually split
We’re heavy users because we regularly provide leather splitting for our customers. Our machine has to deal with everything from very thick, stiff bridle leather to soft, delicate goatskin, so we normally change our blade every 4–5 months.
But everyone’s usage is different.
We have a customer who mainly splits goatskin and still hasn’t needed to change their blade after more than a year.
On the other end of the scale, we have a customer doing bulk production and splitting almost daily for hours with very stiff leather, and they can go through a blade every 1–2 months.
So there really isn’t one fixed answer, your blade life depends very much on how you use your machine and what you ask it to split.
⚠️ Safety note: I’m quite experienced with changing these blades, which is why you don’t see me wearing anti-cut gloves in this video. However, we strongly recommend wearing suitable anti-cut gloves when changing or handling the blade.
