Enjoy the thrills and excitement of a Classic Car Rally in France

For car enthusiasts there is nothing that beats the excitement, thrills and glamour of a classic car rally – so we thought we’d share just three of the best rallies in the south and south-west of France this summer and autumn.

Our first choice is the historic Jean Behra Rally that takes place in Nice between the 9 – 11 September this year. Named after the legendary car racing driver who was born on the Côte d'Azur, the event is organised by the Automobile Club of Nice. The rally covers some 700km of many of the most scenic roads in the world with plenty of hairpins along the way, taking in the southern French Alps and two national parks before arriving at the finishing point along the glamourous Promenade des Anglais in Nice. The entry requirements state that to participate vehicles must be at least 30 years old, with the emphasis upon fun as opposed to speed.

The following week (16 – 18 September) after the Jean Behra Rally is the famous Circuit des Remparts in Angoulême, Poitou-Charentes. This popular event has been held for more than 70 years with large crowds gather to watch classic cars dashing around the old and twisting roads of this attractive hill-top town.

The first day sees a parade of the cars, the Saturday includes an international car rally and finally on the Sunday it’s race day: an exciting and thrilling finale.

Our final choice of Classic Car rallies is the Cévennes Critérium which occurs during late October or November in the Ganges and Le Vigan area, in the Gard department. The event was first organised in 1956 and during that time has attracted many motor racing champions. The departure point is Montpellier followed by two days of special events on the small roads of Cévennes.

These are a few ideas if you are looking to attend a Classic Car Rally this year – what are your favourites in France?

Keeping safe on the road

Having a problem with your car whilst driving – or even a breakdown – can be a worry but if you follow our tips you and your passengers will be safe until help arrives. So if you are unlucky enough to breakdown, don’t despair… you’ll be back on the road soon. Here are our 4 top tips:

1. If you can, drive your car along the shoulder until there are no curves behind you. This will help spot any oncoming traffic that may be on your tail. When safe to do so, get out of the car – but not on the side exposed to traffic.

2. If the engine is working keep it running to avoid running down the battery. Keep the interior light on too if it’s dark.

3. Place your warning triangles 50 & 150 metres behind your vehicle to warn approaching traffic if your vehicle breaks down or is involved in an accident. Don’t rely on hazard warning lights. You MUST also wear a hi-viz jacket and have sufficient jackets for your passengers which should be kept in the car cabin.

4. If the car has a flat tyre, do not attempt to change it unless you can get to the side of the road and the tyre is on the side of the vehicle that’s safely away from traffic.

5. Make sure that your mobile is fully charged before you travel!

Fortunately car breakdowns or accidents are not a regular occurrence… but if it happens, you and your passengers need to be safe. We can help with an emergency out of hours call service 04 93 75 38 83 and a vehicle recovery and courtesy car service. You can rely on us. Drive safely.

At Mechanic06, we pride ourselves on the fact that we deliver an English speaking service and can help clients who own vehicles of all makes and models covering the 06 area, with a courtesy car service. We’ve also 25 years of unrivalled experience. Give Phil a call today on 04 93 75 10 84 or visit our website http://www.mechanic06.com/. We’ll be happy to help you.

How to find a great car mechanic

Repairing and servicing cars of all shapes and sizes is our business but we know that for some people – men and women – finding a great car mechanic that they can trust can be difficult. Add in a potential language barrier if you don’t speak good French and it can be daunting.

We have therefore put together these 4 Top Tips on how to find a great car mechanic.

1. Servicing - what's included? Ask exactly what will happen and ask for the schedule of works. Use your manufacturers' service schedules to make sure parts need to be replaced.
2. Get a quote. This includes the price of the car parts and labour and whether TVA is included. For major work you may want to get shop around. But most importantly, it’s quality that counts …
3. Is the garage up to date? Modern vehicles now use the latest technology. We have computer diagnostics for most vehicles, state of the art 3D four wheel alignment equipment and we’re specialists in air conditioning systems.
4. Customer Service is crucial…You want your mechanic to look after your car, but they need to look after you too. For example, is a courtesy car available? Do they have secure vehicle storage? Roadside recovery? All these are important in providing a comprehensive service.

Top tips for peace and calm when carrying children in the car

Travelling with children can be testing at times, even when the family is looking forward with great excitement to a holiday or day out. So today we thought we would share with you a few tips on how to keep the peace, and enjoy a calm journey…

Before you go, it’s a good idea to share information with the kids about where you’re intending to go; for example, the things they will see and do, creating a sense of anticipation and enthusiasm. Most children love new experiences, so by doing this you will give them plenty to think about especially if it’s a long car ride.

A second tip is to take with you small travel bags with a selection of toys and games, ideally in a container that can be kept in the car so that you can keep the organised chaos to a minimum! Nowadays technology plays an important role in occupying young minds, so if you haven’t already got one, an in-car DVD player, a tablet or I-pad could be just the job.

Of course, we would never suggest that you use bribery as a means of helping to maintain harmony as you head towards the coast or the countryside, but yes sweets can help – or healthy, tasty snacks that you know they enjoy – if you prefer.

Here at Mechanic06, we pride ourselves on the fact that we deliver an English speaking service and can help clients who own vehicles of all makes and models covering the 06 area, with a courtesy car service. We’ve also 25 years of unrivalled experience. Give Phil a call today on 04 93 75 10 84 or visit our website http://www.mechanic06.com/. We’ll be happy to help you.

Keeping your car tyres in tip-top condition and safe on the road
Maintaining good tyres on your car are really important, not only during the winter but all year round.

They’re crucial for the overall car’s performance by ensuring safe braking and stopping distances, reducing the risk of skidding and helping to improve fuel efficiency.

Many of us probably do not check out the pressure of our tyres or their condition frequently enough… but we now have a solution that will help!

Mechanic06 has recently invested in a new Tyre Pressure Monitoring System – called TPMS for short. What does this do? Well, its’ purpose is to warn you when one or more of your tyres is significantly under-inflated, potentially creating a dangerous situation for you and your passengers. European laws require that TPMS is fitted on all new models as of 2012 and on all new cars as of 2014 so this is not something that can be ignored…

Checking the tyres on your vehicle using our special TPMS equipment can be done quickly and efficiently, and won’t cost you the earth… and is cheaper than main dealers. Generally we can find out what needs to be done by inspecting your car in around 30 minutes and within a couple of hours your car will be back on the road, safe and comfortable to drive giving you peace of mind.

Here at Mechanic06, we pride ourselves on the fact that we deliver excellent service and can help clients who own vehicles of all makes and models. To get your car’s tyres checked using our TPMS, give Phil a call today on 04 93 75 10 84 or visit our website http://www.mechanic06.com/. We’ll be happy to help you.

Going skiing? 5 things to check on your car

It’s January and the Alps will soon alive with skiers traversing across the slopes or enjoying some après-ski.

Wherever you are going for a winter break, chances are that you may be taking your car so we thought we would share with you our top 5 things to check on your car before you travel.

First is perhaps one of the simplest… check that your car’s tyres are in a good condition and have sufficient tread. Don’t forget also to check the spare tyre. In snowy conditions in France it is also compulsory to use snow chains on your vehicle, so be prepared.

Second, inspect the battery: if you are not sure how to do this, we are happy to help especially as batteries contain corrosive materials and should be handled carefully.

Thirdly ensure that your head lamps and bulbs are in good working order, and that you have spare bulbs kept in the car in case you need to replace.

Fourthly it is worth trying to keep the fuel tank filled as if the outside air temperature falls below freezing, this will reduce the risk of the fuel lines becoming clogged due to too much moisture condensing in the air above the tank.

Finally ensure that the ventilation filters are functioning; this will help the driver maintain visibility and ensure that your passengers travel in comfort.

Remember that we are happy to help advise you on any aspect of vehicle maintenance and repair… contact us on 04 93 75 10 84 (Out of Hours Emergency Only 04 93 75 38 83) or visit our website www.mechanic06.com .

Air-conditioning… How to keep it healthy

Ask most people to say what their priorities are when choosing a new car and a good air conditioning system is likely to be high on their checklist.

The quality of the air in your car can affect how you feel whilst driving – and if your air con system is not working properly all kinds of nasty things such as bacteria, mold and even fungi could start to grow – not a pleasant thought! Germs can accumulate in the vents especially during the heat of the summer when water may accumulate allowing fungi to develop. Fungi can be killed however by turning the heat on for at least 10 minutes and getting the filter changed regularly.

Of course many germs come into the car through the doors, on hands and feet and especially as a result of food that is eaten inside. Just as you would keep the inside of the car clean, it is important to keep your air conditioning system maintained and in tip-top condition. Using it all-year round also helps to keep it well lubricated and reduces the risk of leaks.

Signs that suggest your car’s air con isn’t working as it should include a change in temperature, odd smells, excessive moisture in the car and peculiar noises which you may not have heard before... and if this is the case, get in touch as we can help.

These types of issues are often resolved easily and here at Mechanic06 we are one of the few garages which are properly registered to fix and repair air conditioning systems. We are an English-speaking car mechanic covering the 06 department servicing vehicles for all makes and models and offer a courtesy car service.

5 Top Tips for keeping your car clean....

Many of us spend a lot of time in our cars and inevitably however careful we are, the interiors such as the seats and console areas will become dirty from a variety of spills and stains, left over sweet wrappers and more besides.

By keeping your car clean, it will not only look great but maintain its’ resale value. So here are our top tips for a smart car whether you own a Ferrari or a Fiat.

1. Keep it clean - always. By removing any rubbish straight away you will ensure your motor doesn’t become a mess. Every time you leave the car, take something out.

2. Wash the car regularly. Whether you hand or jet wash, or take to a car wash, this helps the car to retain its’ sparkle and removes dirt or grime from the bodywork.

3. Leave a bag for rubbish in the car. It’s so simple, but it works.. providing a home for wrappers and other items which fall between the seats and create a mess.

4. Clean up messes quickly. If you leave them too long, stains will be more difficult to remove. Maybe leave a clean cloth in the car, just in case to mop up.

5. Wax it occasionally. Waxing your car occasionally makes washing it the next time easier.

There we have it … five suggestions on how to retain a clean and tidy car. Do you have any more tips to add?
