🔬 Modulight Spotlights: Laser-Sharp Research – October 2026

This month, we highlight research by P. Gangurde and teams at the University of Helsinki 🇫🇮 and Nagoya University 🇯🇵.

The researchers developed light-responsive hydrogels that degrade when activated by near-infrared light. Using Modulight’s ML8500 system, they triggered the release of cellulase enzymes from liposomes, enabling controlled hydrogel degradation.

🧬 Why does it matter? This approach could open new possibilities for on-demand drug delivery from injectable hydrogels and implants.

🔬 LASER-SHARP RESEARCH | September 2026

Can bioluminescence activate photoimmunotherapy from within the tumor environment?

Researchers at Northeastern University and Cornell University engineered immune cells to generate light and tested bioluminescence-based activation of verteporfin in 3D ovarian cancer spheroids.

The result? Bioluminescence alone remained below the effective cytotoxic threshold, while conventional light activation with the ML6600 laser system produced a clear, dose-dependent therapeutic response.
