Seeing what’s invisible in brain tumour surgery 🧠
We are pleased to share a recent article from the University of Illinois Chicago Department of Neurosurgery highlighting how 5-ALA is changing brain tumour surgery, and how HIVEN® by Marginum is being evaluated at UI Health in Chicago.
For neurosurgeons treating gliomas, one of the key challenges is distinguishing malignant tumour tissue from adjacent healthy brain tissue, particularly at the tumour margins. 5-ALA provides a fluorescent label for this demanding task. After administration, malignant tumour tissue glows under blue light, helping provide real-time definition of tumour margins.
HIVEN® provides an additional method for assessing 5-ALA fluorescence during surgery. As resected tissue passes through the device, HIVEN® detects fluorescence and provides the surgical team with audible feedback in near-real time, thereby supporting intraoperative assessment. As highlighted by Dr. Francesco Pucci, Assistant Professor and Neurosurgeon at the University of Illinois Chicago, the ongoing study represents an important step in evaluating how this technology may support surgical decision-making for patients with malignant glial brain tumours.
At Marginum Oy, we are grateful to the UI Health Neurosurgery team for their close collaboration in advancing this important clinical work.
