MCA MGN 681 (M) Amendment 1:
On 19 December 2025, the MCA published MGN 681 (M) Amendment 1, updating and clarifying the requirements of the space and best practice guidance on the safe storage, handling and charging of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.
The updated MGN now also places increased emphasis on the use of purpose-designed battery storage and charging containers as part of a vessel’s fire-risk mitigation strategy.
The updated guidelines can be viewed here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/mgn-681-m-amendment-1-fire-safety-and-storage-of-small-electric-powered-craft-on-yachts/mgn-681-m-amendment-1-fire-safety-and-storage-of-small-electric-powered-craft-on-yachts
While the guidance should be reviewed in full and dicussed with your vessel´s surveyors, the Amendment makes clear that battery containers are expected for charging and storage and should incorporate defined safety features.
Some key points that all battery containers must now fulfil are:
1. Charging must take place in a certified container
2. Charging capability while the container remains closed
3. Temperature rise detection with automated alert systems
4. Application of an extinguishing medium without opening the cabinet
5. Off-gas venting to prevent explosive gas build-up
6. Fire insulation and explosion-resistant construction
7. Automatic charging shutdown on fault or overheating
8. Defined and validated maximum capacity limits (kWh)
9. Insulation to prevent fire spread
In addition, in accordance with “Section 5. Type Approval”, all battery storage and charging containers/boxes should be approved and certificated by a UK Nominated Body before 1st January 2027.
All LiVault products are active systems that meet the key safety requirements identified in the updated MGN.
LiVault and our manufacturing partner, TechnoPhysik Group, are actively working with Lloyd’s Register as a nominated body, together with RISE Institute Sweden and TÜV Nord Germany, to achieve Type Approval in accordance with the guidance.
We will publish another update on Type Approval soon.
