🇸🇪 Looking back at EuroSpine 2026: Connecting expertise, technology, and clinical practice.

EuroSpine 2026 in Gothenburg brought together spine specialists, researchers, and industry professionals to exchange perspectives on the evolving landscape of spine surgery.

It was an opportunity to reconnect with the international spine community, share our approach to patient-specific surgical planning, and explore how digital technologies and anatomical understanding can support more personalized workflows.

Beyond the congress, our time in Gothenburg also included two dedicated sessions: the International Distributor Meeting and The Future of Personalization, where we explored the clinical, technical, and collaborative dimensions of bringing patient-specific approaches into practice.

From conversations with surgeons to hands-on exchanges and international collaboration, these days reinforced the importance of connecting technological development with real clinical needs.

🧠 A closer look at the challenges of revision spine surgery

What happens when spinal surgery involves anatomy that has already been altered by a previous intervention?

This was one of the topics that generated particular interest during our participation at the 75th National Congress of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery (SINch), held in Catania.

Alongside with Biomedica, we created a dedicated space where neurosurgeons could work directly with transparent anatomical biomodels representing different spinal pathologies.

Beyond observing the models, participants engaged in practical drilling and instrumentation exercises, opening discussions around the anatomical and technical considerations of complex spinal procedures, particularly those involving existing instrumentation.

The interest in revision scenarios highlighted the importance of examining how previous surgical interventions influence anatomical planning and technical decision-making.

We thank Biomedica for their collaboration and all the neurosurgeons who contributed to these discussions throughout the congress!

🧩 Behind every personalized surgical plan, there is a team bringing together different perspectives and areas of expertise.

Clinical understanding, biomedical engineering, software development and technical design all contribute to interpreting complex anatomical information and translating it into a structured planning workflow.

Technology plays an important role, but it is the knowledge, collaboration and attention to detail behind the process that give it meaning.

Because personalized planning is not only built with data and software. It is built by people working together around the individual characteristics of each case.

🧠 Medical imaging provides the starting point for personalized surgical planning. But transforming those images into a meaningful 3D anatomical representation requires much more than automated reconstruction.

Relevant structures must be identified, segmented and interpreted according to the clinical context. The resulting model must then be reviewed to ensure that it represents the anatomy needed for the planning process.

Artificial intelligence can help automate parts of this workflow, but anatomical knowledge, technical validation and clinical oversight remain essential throughout the process.

The objective is not simply to create a three-dimensional image. It is to organize complex anatomical information in a form that can support a more detailed understanding of each case.

🧠 Last month, we met with our partners at IDONIAL in Gijón for a technical follow-up meeting of SPINEAI, the public-private collaborative R&D project led by us together with PRIM, IDONIAL, FINBA and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

The objective of SPINEAI is to develop an intelligent platform for the treatment and follow-up of idiopathic scoliosis, bringing together medical imaging, artificial intelligence, personalized planning software, biomechanical simulation, sensor technologies and treatment monitoring into a more automated, precise and personalized workflow for orthotic design.

As the project approaches its final phase, each partner presented the progress achieved across their respective workstreams. During the meeting, we reviewed developments in AI-driven 3D reconstruction from radiographs, planning software for personalized brace design and clinical data visualization, biomechanical simulation models, the experimental testing platform used for validation and sensor technologies designed to measure pressure, corrective forces and treatment usage.

The day also included a visit to IDONIAL’s facilities and a live demonstration of the platform, providing an opportunity to share results, align the next development milestones and reinforce collaboration across the consortium.

It is exciting to see how these complementary technologies are beginning to converge into a single platform with the potential to advance the conservative treatment of idiopathic scoliosis.
